What do you guys know about dissociation? I understand a little bit what it is, but if someone could give me some personal experience or something, that’d be great. My girlfriend dissociates and depersonalizes and I want to help her.
Does anyone know any way to stop someone dissociating? Like, how to bring them back, ground them? I really need some help here, I googled dissociation and got nothing useful. So please help me guys. I love her and I want to help her get better.
Please help me. I’m relying on you.

There’s a couple of websites that might be helpful… DP Selfhelp and I can’t remember what the other one was. Sorry. There are also a couple of books out there… Stranger To Myself and Overcoming Depersonalization Disorder.
Usually DP happens as a symptom bc of something else such as trauma, but when it becomes a problem and interfers with your life seemingly for no reason that is when its a disorder itself. The closest I can think of describing it is one of those bomb detenation remote controlled robots… you can HEAR through the microphone and SEE through the camera but its not you. There’s also a kind of time delay, time is all out of whack.
But that’s just my experience with DP… different people have different symptoms.
All the best, Good Journey.
PS… one thing that helps me is human interaction. Talking, human contact also typing a journal entry on my computer makes my mind and hands work together.
Plenty of sleep and balanced diet are important… and to keep telling yourself “this is real, its ok, hang in there, deal with things, focus… concentrate. You have to stay even if you don’t want to. Ok, what do you need to do now? Come on, work through this. Keep control of things, don’t zone out.” Good luck! … Journey
Hey, me again… seeing a shrink would probably be the best way to go.
Where are you from? My shrink has connections with a clinic in Chicago that has Drs throughout the country.
Also if you Google depersonalization or feeling unreal you will probably get more hits.
That’s also the name of a book that I have ” Feeling Unreal, Depersonalization Disorder and the Loss of the Self” it is neat to read about other people like myself, but as far as treatment they just suggest meds (which I haven’t found any that I could tolerate/that helped… some say Abiilify, or mild antidepressants. There’s also Naloxne which has promise in trials but is experimental more than anything from what I found out and looks as though its highly addictive.) And also cognitive therapy… which is basically changing your thinking and staying cognizant… or aware.
Hope this helps… I ll check back to see if you’ve commented here, or just put DP in the body of your post and I ll do a search for that.
Good Journey.
