Even animals are given the chance to have a peaceful deaths, like putting to sleep. Why is this not the case when it comes to people who don’t want live anymore? If they continue living, they might be a burden on some people and in some cases, they may try to take it out on others. Isn’t it better for both these people and the society to let them die in an humane way?

Society has better things to worry about, quite frankly. If any human really wants to die, there are a multitude of ways to kill yourself. They might not be the easiest, but that just means you really have to want it.
Animals are put down, against their own will, when they are in extreme pain. This is not assisted suicide, this is euthanasia. There is a difference.
I just finished reading “Final Exit” and I too wonder why its this way
Why trust someone else when you can get the job done yourself?
What ways ? I don’t have a gun, i have a car but don’t have a garage for CO poisoning, don’t have access to prescription drugs/sleeping pills, don’t have the material for H2S thing, don’t know how to hang myself in a way which snaps the neck and don’t want to suffocate my self, slitting the wrists never works. The only thing i can do is jumping off my balcony at the 10th floor but am afraid of being crippled in the aftermath. Also i can overdose on Unisom or Aspirin or Tylenol, but i have heard that there is a slim chance these will do the trick and instead permanent liver/kidney damage is possible.
I really don’t want to live, my pain is unbearable (i have major depression), i’m crying almost all the time, but also i don’t want to botch this up only to end up in the worst possible situation because i don’t like my family, don’t have a close friend and don’t like people in general. I’m so fucking desperate.
I wish i had someone to finish the deal together but i’m living in Turkey, so this is not probable. Any suggestions?
Because society still doesn’t accept Mental Illness the same way as Physical illness, although there is more understanding now than say 50 years ago.
They don’t care much if you are suffering, losing your job, social life etc,but when you try to commit suicide they try their best to save you. It’s pretty screwed up isn’t it.
Thats insensitive one_day. Every human being has the right to a peaceful death.
It would be nice if you could go to the hospital, sign a few forms, and be given the means for a peaceful death. But that would require that society have a level of understanding and empathy that is not present today.
@outsider: jumping off a high balcony or cliff is pretty sure fire.
@noom: society DOES accept mental illness, which is why there are support networks in place to help people overcome their mental illness, rather than commit suicide. Suicide is what happens when you’ve given up on curing your mental illness.
@kenneth – Insensitive? I’m sorry. I really do think society has bigger fish to fry. For example, legalising gay marriage, stopping racism, stopping sexism, sustainable energy research, promoting good health and organic produce, more environmental manufacturing methods, better welfare systems, liberation of political prisoners, ending religious fanaticism, ending terrorism… the list goes on. I actually think it’s insensitive of you to subjagated minority groups (gays, ethinic minorities etc) for you to think your problems rate higher than theirs. So, no. I don’t think a peaceful suicide rates very high on my priority list, when most people are perfectly capable of gettting the job done. It’s easy to jump off a cliff. If you haven’t done it, then there’s something else holding you back.
Is there a life insurance that covers suicide?
How do you prepare you wife and kids while you still have the chance?
Is leaving a note at all help full, or would it scar others?
what should you do with your belongings?
should you take others with you?
is suicide by cop, the right cop, covered by life insurance?
@rjsrider:
No insurance covers suicide.
You can never prepare your wife and kids for the trauma that they weren’t enough to keep you grounded. But, you can try talking to them.
Leaving a note is generally helpful in explaining your reasons. But, I think no note is ever sufficient to answer all of anyone’s questions.
Give your belongings to loved ones or charity.
‘should you take others with you?’ Jesus, what kind of a question is that?! No, please don’t murder anyone else on your way out!
What do you mean ‘suicde by cop’? As in, you are a cop? Or you know a cop willing to do it? If so, why bother calling it a suicide? Cop shoots you, for them it’s a job hazard, and you get your insurance payout. But they have to shoot to kill.
@ one_day; Suicide by Cop is when you put yourself in a position where a cop has no choice other than to fire at you. If you point a gun at a cop, and don’t drop it when ordered to do so, he will shoot to kill.
@lucy, thanks. Seems a bit risky though, what if he’s a crap shot? Or other people get shot?
@one_day; Good points. Plus it’s traumatic for the cop. They’re often ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after killing somebody in the line of duty. Law enforcement officers are human beings after all, I doubt the majority of them enjoy shooting people.
@lucy, yeah I wouldn’t want to dump the responsibility of my death onto anyone else… if you’re going to do it you should have the balls to do it yourself. If you’re going to go down this route, maybe you can arrange for a letter to be sent to the cop saying it wasn’t their fault. Although that would probably mess up your insurance…
There are people who might consider suicide at that moment, but change their mind later.
