I wish I could voluntarily be sent to war. There my end would mean something. Death with honor and purpose. Giving my life to save other more worthy lives.
If I ever got sent to a boot camp, I’d probably go all Full Metal Jacket on the drill instructor. Wouldn’t even make it to the war, but I’d go down in a blaze of asshole-killin’ glory.
Hell yeah, I did that, it is FUN. There are three sizes of hose: A, B, and C. It’s like with bras. And you get to have a buddy you go in with, and you communicate by patting their shoulder, and fire and…. ahhhh! It is so great. Maybe you’ll rescue a cat! It will be super meaningful.
Most public service is hurry up and wait. That’s what being a cop is. I have many military friends. Not a one of them ever came close to death. They usually end up adapting poorly to civilian life (don’t we all?) If you don’t have the resources to recover from depression, public service is going to be a challenge. ER techs get shot with a fair amount of regularity. If you work the right shift you might get to death in 5-8 years. The same goes for being a police officer. Working in a mental hospital is a good way to get injured I know that. Usually you just end up in jail though.
Don’t worry, mental illness is either transitory or progressive. That means you will either get better or you will get worse. If you get worse…. I’ll just say the mentally ill do not have a good survival rate of encounters with the police. If you get better, you’d be surprised by how survivable life can be. Hoping for the second option for you. I know you’ll find a place to be sooner or later though.

Maybe there is a way to transplant that clarity of purpose, morals, sacrifice to civilian life?
Also, it is worth mentioning that few wars are that clear-cut.
I’m not sure it’s super meaningful to get blown up by an IED while taking part in one of George W. Bush’s questionable adventures in the Middle-East.
Or to get shredded by machine gun fire for the sake of some field in Belgium.
Nevertheless to fall in honor is better than to live in disgrace

Been there. That’s why I want to go back and end my existence in honor not disgrace.
Not sure anyone is more worthy… we are all just here, plus war is no good for anyone.
I understand sometimes violence is needed, but war usually has to do with greed or WORSE religion
Maybe train to be a firefighter???
