Parents need to do a better job parenting, I hate to be that guy, but when you decide to have a kid you have to give raising them everything you have and then some. I don’t know the studies they have about depression in kids those ages but, I want to believe that without an underlying illness the depression is caused by enviroment. Which means the parents need to do a better job making that enviroment nurturing, safe and interactive enough for the children to grow to their potential
While I agree, it’s important to note that from a very young age, parents cease being the biggest influence on the child. There is actually pretty good research showing that peers matter a lot more to the final outcome.
Did you know that there are private, for-profit juvenile detention centers in just about every state in America? Yeah, they make a premium from the government for every occupied bed. Also, we’re moving steadily towards privatizing our school system and turning it into a for-profit industry. Coincidence? I dunno.
To summarize, I have no clue what might contribute to this individual case, but it’s not surprising given the absurd way people are treated in our society.
Our society is also to blame. Modern life has made people so atomized and sedentary that many often feel isolated and alone. If you have no job, always on the move or not married what do you do for socializing? Unlike societies in times past, most people don’t even have some things they can call home and/or communities. People in the past usually settled only in one place and made their life in what they grew up with. Now people have to move from place to place and get a job. Usually people’s socializing is now limited to work and school. Tough luck then because those in school usually move out when they’re older and people you befriend at work aren’t permanent because of the nature of employment nowadays. Despite the amenities our modern world has to offer, it seems we took a step backwards when it comes to human interaction and communities.
To be fair, the reason work/school dominate people’s lives these days is that around 1/3 of the population has to spend about 30% of their income on housing. 1/2 of 1/3, which is probably 19 million people, have to spend over 50% of their income on housing. That doesn’t leave much for anything else without copious amounts of personal austerity.
Kids are irrational creatures. When things aren’t circumstantially good, they easily internalize whatever stress they’re sensing in their parents, and if their parents aren’t stressed in these times, then they’re extremely fortunate. Kids do internalize that stress, but rarely do they understand what it’s caused by, and self-blame is a big problem.

It’s happened because our society has speeded up to the point that very few people are willing to play the long game.
That’s why we drone-bomb suspected terrorists (and their extended families) and ask questions later.
It’s why Dumbass Trump pulled out of the Paris Agreement.
It’s why we’re medicating kids instead of raising them properly.
And so on.
So true man, so gd true
