Goddamn liars. The people who own the apt complex are assholes. They always lie about inspections and never give you enough time.
3 weeks ago, they put notices on our doors with a notice to enter unit with the reason being “to show perspective buyers.” But no one came that day. Then last Friday, at 5PM, they put a another notice on our doors saying the same thing, notice to enter unit for the purpose of “showing the apt to perspective mortgagees.” The notice said it would be between Monday- Wed. Because no one showed up 3 weeks ago and because they said it was just to show “perspective buyers” I didn’t think they’d come into EVERY apt.
1- They only gave us 2.5d. Legally, notices are supposed to be sent min 3 days in advance. No, it doesn’t matter because these people have been doing unlawful things from the beginning and no I can’t do anything about it because I live in a low-income unit, not a full price one, so I’m always scared they’re trying to kick me out. They’ve been kicking people out 2 years ago when they bought the place. Then people brought lawsuits so they stopped doing some of that. But it doesn’t mean they’ve stopped doing all of it.
2- Anyhow, FIVE guys just trampled in today, with their clipboards and flashlights. Well, they definitely were NOT perspective buyers and were definitely doing the inspections, checking everything, the bathroom, closets, etc. When I asked about the notice of entry being for them to show perspective buyers, the main guy said “well I don’t know about that. They may be trying to sell, but this is an inspection.”
Because I wasn’t expecting an inspection, I didn’t clean up my apt. My apt isn’t dirty but it is very cluttered. I’ve been sick so I had never been able to properly set up my apt and take things out of boxes. So there’s a lot of boxes everywhere and stuff everywhere. I’ve passed the past inspections because I cleared away the main areas (no blocked doors and nothing on my stovetop) but since I didn’t expect them, those 2 areas are not cleared away. Plus lots of stuff on the floor.
Plus, my lease is being renewed and I am currently going through recertification this month. Every year you gotta recertify so you can stay here to qualify for the low income unit.
So it’s bad all around for me. Now I am scared I failed the inspection. I had quickly glanced at the guy’s clipboard and I saw a bunch of checkmarks and O’s. I assume the O’s are the areas where I failed.
Has anyone failed an apartment inspection before? I am scared because if I did fail, they give you very little notice to clear it up. And I’m physically not capable of doing much on my own. And I’ve got no one to help me.
FUCK. If they had said it was an inspection I would’ve cleared up my apt. It’s just not going to look good as they’re currently doing my recertification so my lease is ending in Nov 31 and they could not renew it and I’d be totally screwed. FUCK FUCK FUCK
I just have stuff all over the place and nowhere to put it. Best I can do is what I did the previous inspections, which is to clear all pathways, not block any doors, and clear up the stovetop counter. But there will still be stuff everywhere as I do not have furniture to put the stuff in, like bookcases or shelving.
As of right now, what they might write me up for is
1- closet doorway “blocked” by my foldout couch that becomes a bed
2- clutter on top of my stove (which I do not use and the flip switch in the electrical box to that is turned off)
But if I’m flagged for that, they might want me to fix up the other clutters. And I certainly don’t want all the staff to know and especially the one doing my recertification. And I get a LOT of packages so it just doesn’t look good. It’s going to look like I’m a hoarder. I just have no place to put everything since I was injured the day of move-on and I’ve been sick ever since so I haven’t been able to clear things up.
I clear as much as I can for the other inspections I’ve had, but those did say there were inspections so I prepared for it, even though they only gave us 2.5 days those times too.
So stressed out. I have no one to help me too.
I can’t have my housing in jeopardy. I just can’t.

Sounds like all you can do now is clean up and wait. Which is torture, but that way you’re ready for Col. Apartment Nazi at a moments notice. That really sucks.
I can’t do much now. I feel like I ought to see IF get a notice to clear up. If not, then cool. If yes, then I gotta really hustle.
I don’t want to do much now because the way I cleared it up in the past, it looks good for inspection, but not good for living, as in I just put things away in boxes so doesn’t look cluttered but I would have to pull it back out of the boxes to use.
Kinda how a kid throws everything in the closet, except they check those too.
I have tried to clear up little by little, and it’s been 2.5 years. I just have no where to put stuff into as I don’t have the proper shelving to put them into.
Also, the more stressed I am, the less I’m able to move and get anything done 🙁
I feel shitty and pathetic. :'(
I really don’t deal well with stress well.
I used to hate livin in low income housing. If anything theyd punish u by raising your rent. My landlord got so ridiculous at punishing me that way that i moved out n found a cheaper place to move into
I can’t move out of here and there is nothing cheaper. I live in a city that has really high rents and not enough housing for people.
Also, how can they punish you by jacking up the rent? Isn’t the low income rent set at a certain rate that they can’t legally hike up? They can’t jack it up unless they say you now no longer qualify for low income housing and I’d have to pay market rate, which is what they can do. Which is effectively kicking me out because I can’t afford market rate.
In wisconsin, landlords are shady characters who are infamous for breaking laws. If u find a good landlord, u better pray u can keep em. I live in a cheap town but it always comes with a price and favoritism is how u get by. My landlord hated me n wanted me to move out n meridian group backed her up even though what she was doin was illegal
How are they going to ding you for things that are unrelated to the physical condition of the unit? That’s so dumb it hurts my head. I understand at work where everything is the property of your boss, they can ding you for putting things in front of a fire extinguisher or an emergency exit, but at your apartment? Screw those assholes.
My landlady tried to ding me for having shoddy blinds one year, so I went out and bought upgraded blinds and curtains to hang in front of them with satanic pentagrams on them. That way, when they do an inspection again, I can give them a big FUCK OFF. Those people need to shove their clipboards so far up their asses that it’ll give them dysentery.
I hope this gets worked out for you. While I don’t know the details of how those inspections work I sure feel your concern about being kicked out or priced out.
Yeah, especially since I got nowhere to go. God this is stressing me out. It honestly would’ve been fine had they been honest and wrote it was going to be an inspection on the notice. I would’ve spent the weekend clearing up a few areas and I would’ve been good to go. Now it’s jeopardizing my lease renewal. And if I end up on their “To Watch” list, they’re likely going to keep a watch on me from now on.
I feel sick to my stomach with worry.
That really sucks. It is good thing you posted this. It lets other people know what they might be getting into with this type of apartment. But yeah being sick to the stomach from worry is awful.
wish you could own your own home. I do, and it helps.
So I’ve just spent the last 2 hours cleaning the bathroom. Cleaned the sink, toilet and tub. Will have to clean the floor another day. Cleaned half the kitchen floor a bit and have to finish it another day.
I’m semi-disabled so it’s not easy for me to bend down and twist to clean. My back and toe hurts. Yes, toe. FYI, if you fuck up your big toe, life is hell.
Two hours and I am done. Totally wiped out and in pain. 1 hr 45 min to be more exact. That’s all I can do today. The hard part is decluttering. There’s just no place to put the stuff.
Oh, and I have yet to eat a single thing today.
Stress / anxiety make a good diet plan. I’ve gone long periods without eating also.
What’s upsetting is that they purposely do it so that you’re not ready for an inspection. They didn’t tell us it was an inspection so that when they came, we wouldn’t be ready. They want every excuse to kick people out. Especially low-income units. Especially since mine hasn’t been renovated and they’ve been kicking people out in 2015 so they can come in and renovate and charge people more.
Also, it was slimy how they put the notice on our door on Friday 10/6 at 5PM, so technically they can say we gave you 3 days notice, from 10/6 – 10/9, but putting the notice out at 5PM is not 3 full days. It’s 2 1/2. And that’s assuming you got it at 5PM, which I am assuming most people won’t see it till later, at night. Which essentially gives most people 2 days notice, not 3. And yes, that matters when you’re trying to scramble to put things in order before they come.
Again, even if I had just this Sat and Sun, I would’ve at least tidied up a bit had I known they would come inspect and not “to show prospective buyers” a few random apts. Just slimy.
I hope they don’t kick you out. My parents just moved into a new place with me and they never clean and just shoved all the stuff in the house. I spent 30 consecutive hours with one sleep in between on mothers’ day weekend cleaning everything they had that hadn’t been cleaned in…. a decade? If I was there I would definitely help you 🙁
It’s pretty clean here but the old owner left a huge mess in the garage. The garage alone took me at least 8 hours and it is still not pretty.
It is organized though and I just have to take some stuff to the donation center.
I understand the slimy thing there are too many people like that who are only after money with no concern for human beings welfare.
They have thrift stores with very cheap shelving and storage if you can get out is what I would suggest.
