I watched until about 6 minute mark. I didn’t get much out of it other than her creating two little bubbles of what people may find meaningful. All I could think was that she probably just flew in first class for an hour talk then she’s getting back on the plane to go someplace else. All while eating caviar and drinking white wine. I also wondered why she was standing so strangely. Think she has an injury? Seems she feels like an apostle of the motivating speaker category on the barriers between depression and happiness. Did I miss anything? I will go finish the video.
I’m usually disappointed by TED Talks, but I liked this one. I also liked her, she seemed genuine.
The thing about self-help and pop psychology is that it’s often semantics: lots of people sharing the same somewhat obvious insights using different words, promoting different books. She’s not the first person I’ve heard advocate for meaning over happiness. And whenever someone gives me a list – in this case pillars – that makes me skeptical. But to her credit, the pillars were not bad, even though Seligman has meaning as a pillar of his own PERMA model for well-being, with relationships being another.
I mean: It’s not rocket science. Most people probably have a vague idea that they could be doing something more meaningful with their life and that pure hedonism never made anybody happy for very long.
But still. This talk was a welcome reminder for me. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder what a Ted Talks rehab would look like!
Looks interesting though, thank you 🙂
I’m not sure but I’m betting part of it is an empty room with a chair and a TV set to Fox News.
