“Forty-four percent of Americans own a dog and 29% own a cat. Among pet owners, 73% own a dog and 49% own a cat. Pet ownership among the American public breaks down this way: 27% own a dog but not a cat, 12% own a cat but not a dog, 17% own both, 3% own pets other than cats or dogs, and 40% do not own any pets.” –2.Dec 21, 2006
So this means 60% of Americans are pet owners. More than half the population!
Geez Louise, we are over-run by pet owners! lol

I’m surprised only 3% own something else. Americans only want cats and dogs? That’s boring. What about the other animals?? I’d totally get an unusual pet if I could.
I want a bear. They would be way better than any guard dog! Plus they would be way more cozy in the winter.
and if you’re suicidal, just poke it with a stick and it’ll rip your head right off. Death Wish solved!
An impressive army of cats and dogs!
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against owning pets, I’ve had some when I was a child and thought many times about having a rodent as an adult, but still I wonder what kind of things could be fixed in the world if all this money and care were spent on humans.
True. The fact is, a lot of people just don’t care about other people. People will *say* they care, but they really don’t. If they did, they wouldn’t cut funding (or want to cut funding) for the poor, old, sick, young, disabled, vulnerable, etc.

-omg, an image just popped in my head. What if Earth becomes like Planet of the Apes? Except Planet of the Cat and Dogs? lol Cat would be in charge, cuz they’re wily like that, and the dogs would be the enforcers. Any human resistance would be crushed- literally, by their animal jaws. G’nite humans!
What frightens me the most about your dystopian world are the landmines that they would leave all over the place!
