It depends, if you are just having emotional problems, I could see it helping, but if you have some real problems like becoming homeless or similar problems no it does not help.
They can also call the cops if they feel you are in the act or soon to be in the act of suicide or hurting someone else.
I would only call them if you feel lonely and want somebody to talk to.
Ive called one before, because I had suicidal ambivalence, and I wanted any reason I could find to live. The lady I spoke to was very kind and understanding. It helped me short term yes, but here I am on SP, you know? DW is right, if they think your situation is baf enough theyll call the police
I was listening to anti-suicide radio show in my car on the car radio while trying my damnedest to take a curve in the mountains fast enough to go over the edge. I gave up on dying thinking I could talk to somebody by calling the suicide hotline 800 number they gave on the radio as soon as I could get to a pay phone. This was in the days before we all had cell phones. The lady answered and said some thing like “Greatest Hits of the 60’s , may I take your order?” I was totally caught off guard and just told the lady I was trying to kill myself. Now it was her turn to be caught off guard! Just in the minutes it took me to get to a phone the anti-suicide show had ended and the number had been reassigned. Shit.
The lines really do help talk you down. I have texted in before as I don’t talk on the phone as it is. It helped we get it off my mind and even thought I was going crazy and was so close to suicide the lady answering let me talk and suggested a few things. ofc i understand why they are allowed to call the cops on you but it is still worth giving it a chance in the moment
Ok thanks, pple always tell me to try those but I just didn’t feel comfortable because it’s not like those pple can actually help you solve complex problems. I figured they just mostly listen and try to comfort u. For some pple this might help but I can’t imagine it being a long term solution. The scary part is getting the cops called on u. I had told a friend once that I was feeling suicidal and she called this crisis center and two cops came banging on my door trying to take me in. I was able to convince them I was fine luckily. But this could have turned into a much more serious situation because I had some marijuana in the apt. They asked to search my apt and I said no, thank god. I would have been hauled off to jail over a little bit of pot. Just what we all need right? No thanks
Wow. Did you ever confront your friend and tell her what a bad move that was? I’m sure she thought it was the right thing, but calling the cops on a suicidal person almost ALWAYS causes more trouble than before.
I will advise you don’t tell your friends or anyone else that you feel suicidal again. You may not be so lucky next time. Trust me, you don’t want to go through a psych ward
Right that’s what sucks about feeling suicidal, u can’t really tell people, or u have to be very very careful who u tell. You won’t be helped on your terms, you will be forced into some facility and it may not really be about helping you at all.
i once called it but my phone’s audio quality was too shitty + i probably have a slight hearing problem + the connection back then sucks so much I barely hear what the volunteer said and she also misheard my situation.
After a while she asked if I’m ok and calmed down and I just told her I am cause I want to end the call.

If they call the cops on you, the cops will take you to the psychiatric ward against your will.

They are not going to solve anything. They are just going to listening to what you have to say

It might help if your suicide attempt is impulsive and you just need to cool down.
It probably will NOT help if you’ve been planning your suicide for years because of problems that can’t be solved.
Think of a suicide help line as a random person who doesn’t know you, telling you life gets better so don’t do it. That’s basically all it is.

Yep Shoo01. A facility near me posts a billing rate of about $2400 per night. In addition to possibly not helping at all I would be dead broke too.
