I don’t get it…

by imissyou

I’ve never understood how threatening suicide is abusive. Is just killing yourself without telling anyone better?

I was in a relationship where we both did that years ago, and I don’t do it anymore. I’d almost rather have someone tell me they are suicidal though because it could help prevent them from following through with it.

A lot of the time, it is a cry for help to threaten it. It serves a purpose, but some people do use it as a form of emotional blackmail.

exactly. theres crying for help “i dont like myself. i want to die.” things like that. then theres “im going to kill myself if you leave” which falls under mental abuse to the person youre saying it to.

Threatening suicide is always abusive, because it’s a threat. Some life advice — in general, if you predict a human won’t say “that’s great!” in response to what you have to say, it’s best not to say it at all. If you absolutely have to convey the idea to the human, there are more effective ways to get the idea in their head. Telling someone something that is obviously going to spark a negative reaction from them is just…unwise.
