I have my news feed set to ignore all the political BS and put space stories at the top. This is my pathetic attempt to look up at the stars, since I live in an area so full of light pollution & air pollution that I can barely see the moon. Anyway this weekend’s nerd news is hopping about a distant black hole ripping a star to ribbons with astronomers capturing images.
But wtf, things don’t get much more depressing than this. It’s as if the universe itself is proclaiming: you’re fucked one way or the other. Whether you’re starving, being evicted, bullied, abused, persecuted, excommunicated, or being physically attacked, look up at the heavens: this is the way of the universe.
I wonder how many planets were sucked down the drain with that star, I wonder how many of those planets may have had life, strange fantastic creatures we couldn’t conceive in our wildest movies. All ripped to shreds. While we watch from our telescopes and marvel at the cosmic fireworks & read space news articles, because we’re too disgusted with our own horrors, mass shootings, wars, rape, murders, injustice & righteous destruction in our own back yard.
Try to escape, look up to the stars, but the universe is the same everywhere. Life is pointless, life is doomed, life is violent, and then it ends.

Since youre able to modify it, you should consider setting your news feed up so that you see motivational, positive, uplifting things. Space is cool and all, but I mean, it’s kind of a bummer to spend your limited time on this Earth thinking about things like this, ya know? Just a friendly suggestion 🙂
You’re probably right. I thought space would be a safe news topic but I guess even that can be depressing to a depressed person. I miss the days when I was a kid and dreamed of visiting other worlds and stuff like that, before I grew up and realized that that’s only in the movies. The reality of space is that it’s cold, barren, hostile and deadly.
Unfortunately the uplifting news sites like The Good News Network are mostly just trivia or local human interest stories. Today’s top stories are about a book store that sells used books, and a girl who solves a 500 piece crossword puzzle in under an hour. Meanwhile I’m fully aware that there are wars and devastation and horrible injustices ruining the world. In other words, I need a distraction that’s bigger than the problems we face (hence space). But I guess there’s no such thing as a positive story that’s big enough to overwhelm the horrors. It’s not like we’ll ever see the headline: “Scientists develop a vaccine to make humans stop being assholes” :/
