Whelps, it’s real folks. We can actually die from heartbreak.
“In 2018, researchers from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center found that a person’s risk of suffering from a heart attack increases by 21 times in the first 24 hours after losing a loved one.”
And if we can die from heartbreak, I’m sure we can die from loneliness, depression and despair too.
But sadly for depression, it is SLOWLY killing us, slow and torturous, rather than the instant peaceful death many of us wish for.

not scientific evidence, but I’ve seen it plenty. it’s a lot more common in people over age 50. A spouse dies within a week of the other? That’s how it usually looks.
One that I found interesting is LBJ, former president. Apparently so much of his personality was wrapped up in his career that after being president he just gave up, started chain smoking. His family tried to get him to stop and he said “I’ve now raised you, girls. I’ve now been President. Now it’s my time!”
He died a few years later
Though on the other side we have Kurt Vonnegut, long term depressive. He became depressed sometime in the mid 50s and didn’t pass away until more than 50 years later. He was a smoker too, which seems to have been a point of humor as in late life he started saying things like; “And do you know why? Because I’m 83 years old. The lying bastards! On the package Brown & Williamson promised to kill me.”
worse, he died from falling down some stairs… somehow I don’t think that’s the exit he would have planned.
It’s coming though, damn near unavoidable, to me what difference does it make today or in many years? When I’m dead I plan to decompose into dirt, and I advise anyone else to plan similarly. Dirt doesn’t know or care when it became dirt, so why should I?
he died at age 84, of a brain injury from a fall. yes, it was a bad death bc he was alive for weeks after his brain injury before death finally took him. i imagine the several weeks in between was horrific.
yes, the study showed that 90% of the heartache deaths are from women, after their husbands died, most common age from 58-75.
