NOBODY is willing to help (and I don’t mean my specific case with my family). I mean in general. People aren’t willing to help others, which is why people always say stuff like “go for a walk,” “go journal,” “think positive,” “go see a therapist,” “go take meds/drugs.” It’s to defer them from actually having to do anything. It ends the conversation any time you try to tell them about anything.
Saying that is the equivalent to “thoughts and prayers.” It’s fine to SAY it but ACTUAL HELP is better. People need actual help. That’s why people are in the predicament they are in. Self help doesn’t work bc humans need help from other people. If self help works, then why are there MILLIONS of these books and yet people still have depression and issues?
“self help” is bullshit.

yup this is the root of everything that’s wrong with the human race. Everybody passes the buck. Nobody stops and actually helps. Instead they tell you to help yourself and then they walk away like they did their good deed for the day. If you’re “lucky” (extreme sarcasm here) they’ll call the cops on you, have you forcibly locked up & institutionalized at your own expense, then pat themselves on the back for “saving” you. Been there. It’s a society of hyporcitical fucks.
Humans are social creatures like bees, ants and nature’s marvelous systems that work efficiently, but we’ve fucked it up with our selfish “every man for himself” nature. It’s like we want to believe we’re part of an efficient system that works to a common good, but it’s human nature to say ‘fuck everyone else I’m too busy.’
I’ve read every ‘self help’ book on the shelf and LOOK HOW GOOD I TURNED OUT. We can’t help ourselves, that’s the point.
humans are psychopaths. that’s what we are.
honestly truly absolutely yes. Maybe there is somewhere on the planet where humans don’t act this way, at least not so visibly. I keep hearing the north european countries have the happiest societies and lowest cases of depression. Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Netherlands, Iceland, Luxembourg are all in the top 10. That’s 8 countries in the top 10. What do they all have in common? Great healtchare, all free I think. Imagine being able to pick up the phone and actually get help.
not just free healthcare. the rest of the world aren’t such dumb dipshits like America. Like do you see cops in other countries arresting blind people for walking? (see my other post)
but yes, those 8 countries have ALWAYS been on my list. i would move there if i could :'(
it’s not just universal healthcare. they have great social services, great education, they help people get on their feet rather than telling them “pull yourself up by your bootstrap” while slamming the door in their face like we do here in America.
They even have prisons with no locks and gates, where the prisoners can just easily walk off the premises and escape if they wanted to, but none of them escape.
they have living wages there, where people actually get paid decent.
they don’t have even 10% of the social ills we have here.
i wish i lived in one of those countries, but noooo, i’m stuck in shithole America.
holy shit I need to grab the next boat to finland. I fucking hate this shithole america. You’re so right, what good is carving out a comfortable life when you know the fucking cops can yank you aside and beat you to death just because they don’t like the way you look. protect and serve my ass.
The problem is that we’ll never have good social services in ‘Murika because you can’t say the word “socialism”. Say it aloud and you’ll get strung up. Well guess what… Libraries are a socialist program. Firefighters, socialism. Roads, national parks, K-12 schools, free museums are all socialist. If politicians would just get over themselves and admit we need these things, life wouldn’t suck so bad. But you’re right, there’s this dumbass bootstrap mentality that defines the nation. This aint the wild west but people act like it is. We must be so entertaining to Europeans.
it’s bc the politicians are bought by the wealthy, and the media is bought by the wealthy, so they control the messages and narratives we see and hear on tv and in print and in the last few years especially, we’ve seen them telling social media what to censor on YT and FB if anyone dares to go against the covid vaccine narrative.
Bc all media is bought, and all politicians are bought, the wealthy tells the media what to say and propagandize. And the people are dumb- they believe whatever they hear. If the media heads are talking “socialism” and how “evil” it is, then that’s what the masses will believe.
It is a double edged sword- it’s the media propaganda but also idiot Americans- this doesn’t happen in European countries bc the populace is smart enough to know what socialism actually is- it is universal healthcare, firefighters, post office, libraries, etc and they love it! And they vote for it every time. They vote for wage increases and living wages. So they get it. We actually vote AGAINST raising the minimum wage and that’s why reals wages have not gone up since 1980s.
But American’s are too dumb to look up what socialism actually is and think for themselves and WE are the fucking idiots that vote out socialist programs any time a socialist bill actually even makes it to the floor. So we fuck ourselves and vote against our own best interest time and again. People are that dumb and that easy to manipulate. And the wealthy that control America are laughing their heads off bc we’re simpletons and morons.
the wealthy have convinced the masses that the post office should be defunded, that k-12 should be privatized, that all social services like food stamps and mental health care and social security be cut, all things that benefit the rich. The FEW programs we have for the poor and masses are in danger of being cut and defunded. Yet we fund the police even more even though we’ve seen how corrupt they are. People don’t think WHY the wealthy want to fund the police? The police/military have traditionally sided with the proletariat, that’s why. If you can control the police to quell any and all dissent, especially our police who are given military grade gear and vehicles, the peons get screwed. But we vote for this shit bc ppl are dumb.
Totally, you pegged it. USA is the only country where politicians are openly proudly bought by corporations and rich fucks. It’s called “campaign donations” but it’s outright bribery. If Pfizer wants to kill free healthcare so they can price gouge us, all they have to do is bribe… er ‘make a campaign donation to’ politicians to kill healthcare.
And the problem there is that there are only 2 political parties, so it’s easy to buy a majority. Americans are dumbasses no doubt, but adding to the problem is that we only get 2 options on a multiple choice ballot. Personally I don’t vote because every candidate disgusts me… but what am I accomplishing? Nothing. Even if every american stood up for their values and wrote in the best candidate, it would get drowned out because the 2 parties have so much money they’ll scoop up the masses.
I clicked on a news story about Finland’s election yesterday and was blown away to learn that they have currently have 10 different parties representing parliament. Some bigger than others but there are 5 major ones who each get at least 20% of the vote.
Representative government is inherently a mess, but at least their voters have the freedom to pick someone who speaks for them. We get only 2 choices and they usually both suck. It’s like, who do you pick to fly the plane, a blind man or a drunk? lol just hand me a fucking parachute
In my humble opinion the idea that the people who live in North Europe and close by are happy is a myth. I agree that America isn’t perfect either or any place, it just depends on you to feel good wherever you are. Here is a link that disproves this myth: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45308016.amp
So this article in essence DOES confirm that it’s much better in North Europe.
“Nordic countries like Finland and Norway regularly come out on top of world happiness indexes for wellbeing year-on-year”
“So while 3.9% of people in the Nordic region may report scores so low they are classed as “suffering” – that level is as high as 26.9% in Russia and 17% in France.
So the picture in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden does remain relatively rosy – just not as perfect as some may have painted.”
It talks about how ppl over 80 there are less happy there due to health issues. Well no shit. That’s everywhere. Sick people are way less happy than healthy people, and when you are 80+ you have a ton of health problems, not to mention that most of your peers are dead or dying.
“3.9% of people in the Nordic region are classified as suffering.” And what’s the % here? I guarantee you there’s way more than 3.9% suffering here in the US.
Yeah so while there is NO PLACE that is utopia bc that doesn’t exist, it is still MUCH BETTER in Nordic Countries than in the US. BY FAR.
Is there an opioid epidemic there? Are there mass shootings almost every day there? Is there the same level of homelessness there than here in the US? Are millions of people going bankrupt due to health issues and medical cost there? Is the rate of depression and suicide the same there? Are all their kids having autism and ADD there? Is their education system as lousy there as it is here? Do they have the same level of crime over there or an enormous prison population like we do?
The answer is a resounding no. Whatever they are doing there, ALL those stats, across the board, are MUCH BETTER than the US. Period.
If you are happy living in the US, then great for you. But there’s a lot of people suffering in the US, way more than in most countries in Europe. Nordic countries aren’t perfect, but they’re the best we got in this world so far, and the stats show year after year they are #1 in happiness and wellbeing. Even this article you referenced says this.
I guess it is due to my time working with addicts, believing that nothing is entirely an external or internal problem. It’s integral to taking inventory, to claim one’s own part in whatever matter (except for abuse)…. I say all that and I’m on record calling the 12 step community as a glorified cult, so that just shows how little loyalty I have.
Things have been ramping up over here, partially because of the weather (I just came in after spending an hour sitting outside), but also partially because I invested into the feedback loop. I worked a bit harder, rewarded myself for it, then the next day I was able to do a little more. So it would be dishonest to that to believe that you are not equally capable. I’m not extraordinary.
Systems can be manipulated, and so can people who have authority over things such as, I don’t know healthcare. I like to keep myself tired, when I’m going out seeking help, preferably tired trying to solve the problem I need help on, it improves response and makes others more likely to believe.
Then again, if it weren’t for the crippling empathy and by the rules attitude I’d say I can be pretty psychopathic at times. As long as I have a warm full belly, it’s hard to be motivated to do anything. Hence my complicated relationship with food. Being a little hungry helps too, not a lot, just a little.
I’m of the pirate mindset; take all you can get, give nothing back, when it comes to certain entities, such as government, well American government. I agree that Northern Europe has it better, but so does Canada. More proof that a strong market does not equal happiness, Canada’s economy has been slumping for decades…
They keep people fed, and healthy, because that is better for everyone. Same about not burdening students with so much debt they’ll never get out, that’s strictly an American thing. So yeah, I have my moments I’m almost as fed up with this country as it sounds like you are.
This is where I live though, and so I’m trying to make the best of it. I’m about to milk my local economy for a free graduate diploma. It can’t hurt (yes, I know a graduate diploma can make one less hireable, but so can not being a boot licking whore so I was already screwed in that regard.)
Take what you can get. Give nothing back. That’s about as sociopathic as I know how to be.
