Issue with existentialism is that they make many assumptions. Such as nothingness after death or animals not being self-aware or we being born without asking for it. Under these assumptions human life looks like a tragedy. But I don’t think these assumptions are correct. I used to, that’s why I suffered from existential crisis, but not anymore.
But I agree with video’s critique of idea of progress and hope around it. So much that’s taught to us or that we learn, directly and indirectly, is false.
Human life IS a tragedy. Just look around- war, death, famine, floods, and just plain ol’ poverty created by the wealthy to keep the masses poor and in check. You can believe what you want, that is fine. But:
1- there is NO proof there is something after death. Even if there was something after death, what makes you think there’s something good after? Considering how most religion says if you don’t believe in THEIR G-d, you will be in eternal damnation/Hell- which that means the vast majority of humans will wind up in Hell- IF there is such a thing as an afterlife.
2- Animals being self-aware or not has no bearing on human suffering. Even if animals are self-aware and suffer, that doesn’t make human suffering not exist or lessen any of it.
3- Humans ARE born without asking for it. It just takes 2 idiots to spawn children. Very few who birth children are capable parents or should even be. At least 80% of humans are born into poverty, illness, genetic diseases, babies born with fetal alcohol syndrome, drug addicted, abuse, etc. How many humans ASKED to be born?
I’m not here to sway your mind- you can believe what you want as it helps you sleep. No one wants to admit the truth bc the truth is bitter and depressing. I agree with this video. Human Life IS suffering- for the vast majority of humans, especially those born into poverty or to shitty parents. Like me. And I certainly DIDN’T ask to be born.
Hell, even if someone wasn’t born into poverty or had shitty parents, the way society is structured, the way “life” is structured, very few ppl are “happy”- especially the have-nots. Even the middle class in America are not doing well- 46% depression rate. Who can afford a home or rent? Who can afford the ever increasing cost of groceries? 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. I don’t see how human life is NOT suffering.
1. Not even taking religion into account, nothingness after death is non-logical because nothing in world just vanishes. I wasn’t, now I am, again I will not be – that’s not how we see world working. Things come from somewhere, then go somewhere. So if I am, then I had to be somewhere before birth and I will be somewhere after death.
2. True but existentialists and video also use it in their arguments to make it look like something went wrong with humans, something unnatural. As if animals are in blissful ignorance and only we are suffering from awareness. So at least, among many other issues we deal with, we can at least not harbour in our mind that we are freaks of nature.
3. What made the two idiots spawn children? Sure they did the act but what made them do it? Where does desire come from? Or thoughts? We don’t know. They just come and enter into mind of person, takes him into their grip and makes him do acts. Now this may sound wild but I say it was the CHARACTERISTICS of future child making themselves tangible. In that way child asked to be born. Why else does child carry characteristics of his parents throughout his life as if they were his/her own? Because they are his/her own. It can be said in another way also but that will go into domain of soul which then becomes religious or spiritual matter so I will avoid that.
This issue opens question of free will also. Many philosophers say it does not exist. Experiments have shown that person’s brain makes decision some time before person himself takes that decision, sometimes as early as 4-5 seconds.
I am not denying suffering from outside causes, from society, politicians, poverty, illness. But I don’t want to add internal causes to it. Existential crisis also gives suffering. But unlike outside causes, this one can be solved with words.
Life is just depressing for many of us. If that wasn’t true, then why are there so many ppl depressed, on suic— websites, numbing themselves on drugs/alcohol, etc? -_-
I mean, I wish I could not believe what I do, bc reality is shitty. But I can’t make myself “think happy puppies and rainbows and sunshine,” which is what the whole world wants us to think. All that “positive” mindset spiel.
