It isn’t fair to blame yourself or assume that you somehow, in any way had some “cause” to their choices.

Everyone here is like hostages on a plane … the “hostage taker” is whatever brought us to this place … the other people here are just sharing the experience … the “rescuers are whatever “clicks” within us to secure or release … but like any rescue team knows … there WILL be losses – so they go in with the assumption that ALL hostages are already dead … of course the goal is to save as many as possible … but there IS going to be a battle on the plane and there WILL be casualties

So if the ‘rescuers” start from the position hat ALL hostages are already dead … they can go directly after the hostage takers to beat them … then and only then – after the hostage takers are all killed or arrested do they concern themselves with how many hostages have actually survived … every single survivor is a WIN for the rescue team … every loss is a WIN for the hostage takers …. the outcome was never in the hands of the hostages themselves

(although in our case we can choose to leave the plane one way or the other)

You are NOT on the rescue team … we’re all just trying to get off the plane – one way or the other – but you can’t take responsibility because someone else bought a ticket to be on the same plane

glad it did – I was kinda worried that it might be hard to “see” the connection … but it really is true for the Israeli special Forces … they are trained to go on the assumption that in a hostage rescue attempt, they consider all hostages as “already killed by the hostage takers”

I use to think ‘wow – what a horrible and callous way to think’ … but then I came to realize the brilliance in the mindset … if a rescuer hesitates for a split second during a rescue attempt, it could not only get him killed but also several MORE people he is trying to save … so if his shot hit’s the hostage AND the bad guy … at least the bad guy can not harm any MORE people.

there’s a saying among animal rescuers – “Saving just one dog/cat won’t change the world, but surely it will change the world for that one dog/cat.”

if you can help someone to smile or get their mind off what hurts them – even for a moment – you’ve done something great – no matter the ultimate outcome.
