Johnny Cash’s version was a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ original. You don’t want hard rock, just mellow, sooo…
Counting Crows is a good one if that’s what you want. How to destroy angels is a project by Trent Reznor(NIN) and his wife, which I am listening to right now. The full album is on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2JyDWwrfCs
It’s way more chill than NIN, and with a melodic female as the lead singer, with Trent Reznor’s haunting touch on the sounds and rhythms.
Lights in the Sky – Nine Inch Nails,
All Apologies – Nirvana,
Out of Time – Blur,
Otherside – Red Hot Chilli Peppers,
Marigold – Nirvana,
No Distance Left To Run – Blur.
I don’t know if that’s mellow enough for you. But it’s mostly sad.
if you’re gonna recommend nirvana songs, gotta go with “something in the way” and “you know you’re right.”
And although it isn’t “sad,” soft and mellow also prompts me to recommend “disposition” by tool. Put that on repeat and relax for a while.
I have a… hypothesis, i guess you’d call it, that listening to sad songs while depressed is never a good idea. It sucks being sad. Idk why anyone would want to be sadder, while being sad already.
If anything, flood your mind with Meshuggah (“i” might change your life), and get motivated to do something different.
thanks… and Ive tried listening to upbeat songs but I get annoyed because I cant relate to what they are feeling or talking about. Most songs only talk about love sex and money or drugs which I have no interest in right now. The only thing I can listen to is depressing music because the artist knows how I feel
Some might say- Oasis
We Gregory and The Hawk has a lot of sad sounding calm songs.
Not many listen to her even though shes awesome.
Angel- Jack Johnson
Just breathe- Anna Nalick
I am particularly fond of “shame in you,” and “frogs.” And… hmm… have you heard “died?” (or is that “you died?”) The entire Jar o’ Flies EP is great too. And Sap. Man AIC is awesome.
Or, mad season – “river of deceit” or “wake up” or “lifeless dead” or “all alone?”
Thanks… these are all great suggestions ….I am building a playlist for the day I choose to go I will at least have something to carry me on into the darkness

I assumed he/she would have heard Something in the Way because it’s on Nevermind. Most people have heard that.
And You Know You’re Right isn’t that mellow.
Arcade Fire can be mellow and depressing.
Actually theres a song i like….that sounds depressing at first but is kinda like. It brightens up. Its not about that.
I’m Alive- Becca
Okay, i thought of something else.
You want mellow and sad…
Alice In Chains has all you need. 🙂

Radiohead. Some of Kasabian.
Kasabian – La Fee Verte. Goodbye Kiss.
Groove Armada – Think Twice.
Mark Knopfler. He’s my absolute favorite, and writes a melody of regret like nobody else. Not necessarily sad, but the music speaks for itself.
any specific songs for him?
