I was depressed for a year a few years ago, thankfully I’ve overcome this and now am determined to help whoever and everyone that I can. The only problem is I don’t know how to/ the best method to help with depression/ self harm so any tips/ methods are greatly appreciated I do recommend the butterfly project as it is an amazing idea. Thanks

The most important qualities a person can have when trying to help another is empathy, patience and understanding. Most if not all of the ‘professionals’ I’ve spoken to whose job was to support me came off blatantly phony and lacked any empathy for what I was going through, despite their claiming that they had “been in the same exact place” before. Listen to others, hear their reasoning and give them genuine advice that you would exercise yourself if you were in that position. Don’t be judgmental and be realistic, try to be positive (There is a fine line between ridiculous optimism and realistic optimism of course) give a person space, and respect them above all. That’s what I’d like a person with whom I’m sharing a personal connection with to have.
you can help me by removing my scars.lol
^ I agree with this but would also like to add….No matter how small or ridiculous and ludicrous a persons problems may seem to you….always remember we all have different perspectives that make us see things differently…. I guess that would fit under “understanding” but I just wanted to point that out.
*I agree with SB
You can’ help anyone here bro. They just get annoyed deep down when you try to help.
@IFM&Y not true….. some people (like myself) are just beyond the realm of being helped. There are no words anybody can say to me to change how I feel….but not everybody is too far in the abyss to be reached. There are some people on this site that would benefit from somebody reaching out….others….not so much.
SB pretty much nailed it and PnL brings attention to some very valid points. I think simply listening and sharing experience and knowledge are key to relevant assistance and understanding that not everyone is open or receptive to the perspective of others. Thick skin is also helpful 😉

And just if you want help someone just go to talk to them about whatever and ask how are they and umm certainly never leave anyone alone thinking they need time
