Most of us here are seriously contemplating suicide or “just” having suicidal thoughts. My question: Is there something you do during the day/night that helps you keep those thoughts in check?
I’m not exactly classy. Vodka and sprite, usually. It gets the job done and sprite is good at covering up the taste of whatever you mix into it.
Thanks. I came up with it a while back, though a google search shows I’m not the first. I went to play a few years ago that was based around the mythology of Persephone. Interesting stuff.
Ah well, alcohol is alcohol. 😛 I like pretty much anything, myself, although I’m quite fond of Gin & Tonic and whiskey/Scotch.
Hehe, yeah. I chose the name randomly. I was thinking of another Greek character, Pandora, but then Persephone came to mind. The Queen of the Dead, or the Underworld, so I thought it seemed fitting to use on a suicide forum.
Have you heard of the show Utopia? It came to mind when I saw your moniker. It’s a British show, a bit of a surreal thriller, with a futuristic yet current vibe. Quite good.
I had heard the title before but knew nothing about it. The only British show I have really watched is Doctor Who but Utopia sounds like it might be up my alley. Though I’ve got a few TV shows that I never got around to watching.
You should really check it out; it’s one of the best TV shows I’ve seen in recent times, British or no.
Doctor Who is great as well. Same here – I have a list of a tonne of stuff that I’ve been meaning to get around to. Not sure when I will, but I sometimes download episodes onto my phone. I don’t have a TV and I’m not on my computer much, so, my phone works. It’s a superphone with a reasonably wide screen so it’s ok. There were a couple of other shows along the same vein as Utopia that I enjoyed from the past year – Orphan Black (Canadian – about clones), and Real Humans (Swedish – about human-like robots). If you haven’t seen them already, they’re both definitely worth looking into, in my opinion.
Weather the storm, whether the storm is within, or without.
Think of something else. Try to relax. Close your eyes and take a calm, deep breath, hold for one beat, calmly let it out. Find something interesting or enjoyable to train yourself to focus on. It might take a while, but you can learn to mitigate and minimize the impacts, and deny control from those nasty thoughts. They’ll still happen sometimes, but you can learn to weather those storms.
I agree with clevername. I find something to focus my thoughts on; not just my problems that seem so large. Deep breathing, eyes closed, thinking of the happiest I’ve ever been seems to help for a little while.
y’all gonna make fun of me. But, I watch children’s shows. I have to admit winnie the pooh always makes me cry. Well, the recent ones the movies anyway Pigglets big movie and the Tigger movie. Maybe that’s not such a good idea. My little pony always seems to shine up my day.
@Wordless. I LOVE your response. I do the same. I use headphones and my phone to creat an isolated world of childhood glee. Hooray for Netflix Kids! Also youtube! Conan O’brien clips FORCE me to laugh. There is even a George Carlin bit on suicide that should make everyone here fall out of their chairs they are thinking of using to hang themselves! Or, when in doubt youtube animals! Did you know giant cats purr too? You can see video of it. Absolutely adorable.
Also, sometimes I’ll find a gripping series to watch and that helps to distract me. Breaking Bad was one of the best. Prison Break helped too. I liked other ones also, Gossip Girl, Make it or Break it… teen drama’s but they’re pretty good. Whatever show you like, if you can find a series that you’re into, it can help to distract your mind momentarily at least.
I just downloaded a book Ive always wanted to read: Infinite Jest. The jest was on me bc it turns out its the 10th longest english novel at almost half a million words and over a thousand pages of tiny squinty eye print. So now I have to live through that! Lol

Five or six mixed drinks then I go to bed. I do that about twice a day.
I’m not recommending it…just answering your question.
@DystopianParadise What sorts of mixed drinks? I like your username, by the way.
At night? Eat spicy food and take a swig of that 84% rum I got for my birthday, otherwise, just let it sit.

They’re becoming increasingly uncontrollable for me…

Music, mostly. Polishing my boots and ironing kit is somewhat therapeutic as well. Otherwise, I just converse with myself.

Cigarettes, brandy, a book, and the night sky.

I take Ativan and go to sleep. If it’s during the day, they at least reduce some of my anxiety and slow down my racing mind.
