I’m not looking for a debate, I’m open minded looking for a strong belief. Â Death by your own hands or natural causes, what do you think will happen or where you will go, if anything at all, after you die?
I would like to retain my memories in death that is all…..I don’t really want a “life” after death just the ability to replay my memories crystal clear for eternity ….I’d never get bored
I was thinking the same thing… if i were to retain my memories there would be no point on taking my life… maybe just keep the good ones? that’s wishing for too much i guess haha
A few cherished memories from the past are the only thing keeping me sane really….I value them more than I value my life….I’m not saying I want to remember everything of course not but from 2004 on back….I want those memories…..most of them anyways ….
Ive read some dubious claims. Problem is the “recounting” of it usually happens when they havebhad time to collect information. Or maybe they did have the capability to actually see or sense it before or during the event. There are just too many problems with NDEs for me to hold much stock. For example, people claim to have them during moments of extreme stress but when there life was not ACTUALLY in danger. In other words, they didnt die and come back. But stress can cause the release ofvthese chemicals.
I have a very strong belief in life after death. I’m a Christian as well so I believe the standard heaven/hell theory. Not only that tho, I’ve just had many experiences now that have proven to me personally that spirits do exist and the deceased do live on. I also believe the accounts from people who’ve had near death experiences and some of the things that they describe could not even have been seen physically even if they were conscious. They describe things like WIG stated like the crime scene or things that happened elsewhere after they “passed”. The accounts of what they have seen are not worth screwing with to me. If there is a hell… I don’t want to risk being there for all of eternity. It is possible.
It scares me actually. A guy who had stalked me for 1 1/2 hung himself and I’m always scared now because of my belief that spirits go on and I wonder if he’s near me or what. Really spooks me. I do have some ptsd too tho, so I suppose that’s what that is. I found him too. Horrible.
What if what we’ve thought NDE stood for was wrong this whole time? what if it is “Near Dumb Experience” like where you said or thought something so stupid and moronic that your brain malfunctions and right before you are on the edge of the death what you see is your brain going into total meltdown before you die? like the “blue screen” just before the system crashes?
@Tiger, Im curious….how does spirits still being here, where they can be sensed, fit into a heaven/hell theory? If I were to believe in spirits, I would not be able to squish it into a Christian view of things. I would have to go more with a pagan type cosmic energy theory. For example, it says that all the different gods are just different cultural perceptions of man witnessing the same thing. That they are just “aspects” of the amorphous energy that permeates the universe. Like Aires is the energy of anger and battle that exists in all life. This neatly explains why each culture sees THEIR deities….of course the energy is going to manifest itself in the way they are comfortable with. OR back to the brain shut down theory, which is accepted by most academics and has the most provable empirical evidence, can explain this by saying the brain is of course going to conjure the image of the afterlife that has been bouncing around inside it.
@Tiger, fear of Hell was Christianity’s greatest invention of control. Keeps people behaving and even keeps them alive to serve, no matter how miserable their existence bc they cannot kill themselves. The idea of “hell” has an actual history, and it was not originally about punishment. I can be wrong about spirits existing. But I cannot make myself believe that when I die, I will face some kind of judgement. Especially not for choosing to end my life.
“Simply a mind shutting down wouldnt have that capability. Now would it?”
Yes, actually.
Have you ever had a lucid dream? Imagine a supercharged lucid dream “on steroids.” That’s what happens, because the brain goes into super-emergency-crisis mode, and starts deploying large amounts of all those wonderful endorphins it usually carefully administers.
It is entirely possible for a human to artificially induce their own chemically natural delusions. People can make themselves hallucinate, some through extensive training, others by accident, due to flaws in their brains.
The mind is very powerful. It can make us see and feel things based on our own fears and continuous thoughts. Any of what you’re all saying is possible and I realize this. I have started taking a new medication that I’m simply so terrified to take and every time I take a dose I start recalling thoughts that have scared me in the past. It’s basically pot pills, but I quit pot years ago, because it caused me to feel paranoid. Now my brain/mind is making me feel from the second I swallow the pill. It can’t be the pill causing me to feel that because I’ve hardly swallowed it and I’ll start feeling that instantly. It couldn’t be the pill. The mind is extremely powerful.
I dont buy it. If that was the case, I certainly would have been a textbook case of someone having one. I had (and have) all of the symptoms of severe stress).
I can assure you my body is and has been flooded with horemones from stress, especially when I even get a piece of mail related to Fernanda/the divorce.
I have never had an NDE or anything even similar to one.
@ fortunear I just don’t wanna take the risk of there being a hell and me ending up in it. I have often wondered if we’re all worshiping the same God. It doesn’t seem fair if religion in general is right about there being a God, but only one religious group gets to go to heaven. So, ya I’ve always thought that each religion was maybe worshiping the same God.
About spirits existing, I strongly believe they do. I have seen proof. Undeniable proof. I can post the story or one of them and if you can see any other reason behind what happened besides it being a spirit, then please let me know what it could be. Maybe you can actually help put my tortured mind to rest. I would love if I can stop feeling so scared all the time.
@CagedTiger: Ah pascals wager….seems legit until you realize any religion could be the right one and you may end up in hell for worshiping the wrong “god” ….so you may be on your way to hell by being a christian thats the thing you don’t know…
Here’s my wager: if there was an all-powerful, all-loving, all-good god, who wanted me to know he exists…
I would know he exists. He would make sure of this, because it’s the desire of an all-powerful being. All-powerful means there are zero limitations on his power. He could have a one-on-one chat with each of the billions of individuals in the world, without time being a problem, because he is all-powerful.
But that doesn’t happen. Instead, i see zero evidence that any such thing exists.
And if i am somehow wrong, then it is only because of the way this god created me, and so he can’t blame me for his own doing. And if he does, he’s not worth worship, and there’s nothing i can do about it anyway.
Pascal’s wager is based on a false premise. The idea that any god exists is just too fantastical to be taken seriously… despite the fact that so many really do.
@Clevername Why would you even want to worship a being that ‘created’ you without your consent? I have no desire to worship anyone or anything. I never asked to be born. I would never ‘bow down’ to such a Creator if it existed. I’m not going to respect anything just because it has more power than me. Big deal. I’d rather not have my ‘freedom’ taken away, which is why I am a law-abiding citizen, but aside from that… Bleh. I admire people in positions of power; I do not fear them.
@ Painnlife, Tho I am a Christian, I still am hoping that all religions and also all good behavior in general leads to heaven. It wouldn’t be fair if all religions were doomed to hell except for one. And what about all the good people who have never even been exposed to religion to even have a chance to deny it? I don’t know… It’s really hard to make much of the unknown and I’m a firm believer in Christianity, so whatever happens to me will happen I suppose. I’ve also thought that God can’t be so cruel as to condemn all suicides to hell. There has to be some evaluation on a case to case basis. But again… what if there isn’t?
@Persephone: yeah I never understood why god wants us to fear him….fear is not respect….or love ….why would you want your creation to fear and love you? seems like something a kidnapper would want
@PainNlife It’s ludicrous. If anything, it greatly speaks for the men who wrote the Bible. Hate on women, kill everybody. Let’s get real aggressive, folks.
Then some peaceable types came along and wrote nice fables about a chill pothead who wandered around with a bird on each shoulder and talked about love and goodness. All the aggressive sorts couldn’t stand this; they probably thought he was gay. “Burn all the gays!” (Good thing I didn’t live back then.) They killed him but lo and behold he was actually Superman in disguise, and he returned from the ‘dead.’ (I can’t really recall what happens after that except for a few fishing trips and barbeques with lots of hugging.)
@cagedtiger….I notice you said you are a “firm believer”….have you read the bible from front to back? that is the best tool for creating atheists ….the bible….it contradicts itself time after time….it violates all sorts of rules god himself allegedly imposed….it violates many rules of science logic and common sense and humanity….if you haven’t….read it all and then see if you still believe in the doctrine you were fed…..my stance is I don’t doubt a god exist because I have no way of knowing so I leave it up to “what if” and leave it at that….if he does great…if he doesn’t great….either way….the bible says all that don’t go by its way will perish….and every other religion also says that….you’re basically hoping for Christianity to be the right one….lets say Islam was right this whole time…….guess where you are going when you die?
@Persephone LOL….you should watch cultofdusty and Jaclyn Glenn on youtube…..they are 2 very outspoken atheist with very comical views about the bible and things pertaining to religion….I think you’d enjoy them both
@ Painnlife ….and every other religion also says that….you’re basically hoping for Christianity to be the right one….lets say Islam was right this whole time…….guess where you are going when you die?
I have thought this exact thought LOL. Fingers crossed! There’s my back up belief that people who were generally good should also be saved. Only the really rotten ones shouldn’t be if anything. Or maybe saved and rehabilitated into society. Idk… just babbling on about unknowns now.
And no, I haven’t read The Bible from end to end. I really should. Truthfully, I find it long and hard to keep my interest. I have read some of the Psalms and Proverbs and some other more interesting parts but shamefully, not much. Have you?
“Why would you even want to worship a being that ‘created’ you without your consent?”
That’s neither here nor there. If i don’t exist, i can’t consent. There’s no way around that.
“I have no desire to worship anyone or anything.”
Nor do i.
“I never asked to be born.”
No one ever does.
“I would never ‘bow down’ to such a Creator if it existed.”
In the event such a being proved worthy of my loyalty, i’d probably have no problem with acting in accordance with its instruction.
“I’m not going to respect anything just because it has more power than me.”
You should always respect everything that is more powerful than you. Respect is not even close to the same thing as Worship. Respect also doesn’t mean you have to comply. It just means you know it could destroy you very easily, and so you consider that factor when making any decision.
My “wager,” is about showing that it’s ludicrous to believe that any worship-worthy god would have any problem with the way i think, because either there is no god, or god made me, and intentionally remains hidden. No “all-good” being would intentionally create a being just to then manipulate it into punishment. And if such a being does exist, despite zero evidence to reasonably assume that it does, then there’s nothing we can do about it anyway, and no way to reason with it. If it is unreasonable, there is no way of knowing whether anyone is, or even can, do the right thing in its eyes. The whole concept is ridiculous, and my way of thinking about it shows me that there should be no problem with not believing it, unless viable and legitimate evidence arrives.
I have nothing to fear in this regard, because it isn’t real. And even if “the good great god” is real, and intentionally hidden, then he would still be good enough to understand that i’m not wrong in this situation, and that the situation is of his own making, not mine. Why should i believe it is reasonable to expect damnation for what is divinely ordained? Why should i believe anything is divinely ordained?
My wager is that even if there is a god, it’s okay if i think there isn’t. If there’s a hidden god who made me this way, he knows what i think, and why. If he didn’t want to make me this way, he would have made me something else. So if there is a god, i am “meant to be” an atheist, and so why should that be a problem, if it’s what that god wanted to make? And if he is indeed imperfect, then surely i’m not responsible for his mistakes. And if he blames me anyway, then he’s not worth worshiping, no matter how long he might insist i burn in hell. And if that is the divine plan, then there’s nothing i can do about it anyway. If god wants to make people he doesn’t like, just to have an excuse to send them to hell forever… why would anyone worship that? Why would anyone believe that worship would stop them from being sent to hell for any other outrageous reason?
I don’t think it really matters what anyone believes, as long as you try to make sure your actions don’t cause needless suffering for someone else. That said, i certainly do prefer the company of those who don’t require me to have endless debates about something that doesn’t even exist. There are plenty of other more interesting and more relevant topics and experiences to be found in life. Why waste so much time and energy on “god?”
@cagedtiger: nope….but I have been directed to a lot of “excellent scriptures” by various websites…..like the one about how god wanted Abraham to murder his own son to prove he was faithful and just when he was about to do it god calls it off…..or about how when the kids made fun of a guy for being bald he cursed them in gods name and god sent bears to kill them….or how god killed every 1st born to get back at the pharaoh for not setting his people free (and people say he is against abortion LMAO) ….and then there is the good ole incestuous tale of two daughters getting their father drunk and fucking him…..like are you seeing the utterly barbaric trend here?…..
@Clevername …judging by your comments on this website, it rather seems that you yourself do put a lot of time and energy into the topic of ‘god.’ Hehe. No offense, I’m just making an observation. I agree with most of what you said otherwise.
What type of god arbitrarily dooms large segments of his creations to the lake of fire simply for having the rotten luck to be born in a geographical location that does not worship the”right” version of “his” word?
The kind of god that doesn’t exist to set the record straight – that’s what kind
and if you’re a “firm believer” you can’t change the rules – if your god says all suicides are doomed, then yes, he IS that cruel and there is no case by case assessment – he’s freaking god, he has spoken, who are you, mortal, to modify his word?
better to reject a god who cannot provide even the most modest evidence for his existence
Ok real quick, in response to all the “wrong god so you go to hell”. We live in a predominantly Christian society so you may not have been exposed to much else, but “hell” is a Christain/Islamic/some Judaism thing. Other gods….like Norse Pantheon of Odin and Thor….or Just the Crone and the Horned one….or Buddha…or the Hindu gods….they do not really give a crap if you believe in them. Nor do they demand you capitalize God. Thats strictly the jealous one found in the bible or the other “holy books.” The other gods, if they bother to ‘punish’ you at all, do so for being a big fat jerk to others. And for no other reason! Karma is the law of nature in most of them, not the actual gods. And isnt that more believable and comforting? That nature, not some entity that demands worship, is going to balance things out? That it almost obeys Newtons third law in that if you have pushed others are your life, its going to nudge you back, either by forcing you to live again instead of being one with the cosmi
” …it rather seems that you yourself do put a lot of time and energy into the topic of ‘god.’”
Do i need to explain the obvious reason for that? Or are you just purposely not mentioning that part, but instead emphasizing what would appear to be hypocrisy, if not for the purpose behind the energy i do spend on saying things about it?
My energy isn’t actually spent “on a false god.” It is spent on people, trying to make them think, so they can realize they should be spending time on real things, and not having their actions motivated by false beliefs.
I live in a world surrounded by people whose actions are primarily motivated by belief in something false. Many of their thought patterns have detrimental results, due to those false beliefs. I have personally experienced much unnecessary strife and anguish, whether directly or indirectly, due to the majority of people acting on their false beliefs. It would be better if everyone was aware of this. Not saying anything about it makes me part of the problem that oppresses and hinders me. I can’t willingly contribute to keeping myself down and out, regardless of what anyone’s crazy book says.
@Clevername No worries. It drives me nuts too. I guess as long as you feel you are putting in a worthwhile effort, you’re good. I’ve quit discussing such things in real life because I realized that it only leads to trouble. On the Internet it’s not so bad.
there is something i would like to say to christians and other abrahamic religion followers. they seem to take everything in hard, concrete way.. that if i did this and this act i’ll be punished; tell me, won’t you be punished if you ‘think’ about doing that act too? a person think about committing suicide 100 times, attempt it 10 times, now even if he doesn’t succeed, won’t it still be equivalent to committing suicide in the eyes of god? someone plans to rape a child, does all the planning, but due to some change of circumstance unable to do it, won’t he still go to hell? i don’t think there is much difference b/w thought and act. thought itself shows what is in your mind; its only because of outside limitations you are unable to execute it. i think our thoughts produce as much karma as our acts, or maybe a little less. infact i think our act does nothing more than fixing that thought in our mind more concretely. if a person does a bad act and somehow forget about it (both consciously and subconsciously..i.e. even if somebody makes him recall it, he still feel like he didn’t do it), or does an act in a forgetful/hangover state, i think it won’t register into his karma book.
Do you think things would be any different if Hitler had simply only thought about eradicating the Jews? Or is thought and action really the same thing?
What if the U.S. had only thought about dropping a-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Would that have been just as bad as actually doing it?
What if jeffrey dahmer would have merely thought about killing and eating people, instead of actually doing it?
And any of the countless other examples.
Thoughts and actions are very not the same thing. I think it’s absurd to suggest that any “god” would punish anyone for thinking anything at all. I don’t think it’s absurd to suggest that heinous *actions should be punished… but since god isn’t real, that only happens if we make sure people are held responsible and accountable for their actions.
By god i mean the effect a cause produce on that very individual who produced the cause; in other words – karma. Hitler did so many bad acts, but what effect did it produce on HIM? He must have reincarnated in hell; but i think he must have got a higher a position there.

I don’t see any reason to assume there is any god, an afterlife, or any next or previous lives. You can fancy any idea as you please, but that doesn’t make it true.
If you only think it, it doesn’t actually occur. There is nothing difficult to grasp about that concept.
Well, we won’t know until the time comes where we’ll either see what happens next or there’s just absolute darkness and nothingness because that’s all that there is.
I do believe in God and cannot believe otherwise mainly because of my upbringing. We all know that the mind is a powerful thing. Imagine how blasphemous it would feel to me to speak against a God that I believe exists and that I have been believing in for 40 years. Just saying… I do respect all the different beliefs of others tho and not only that, I think that any of us could be potentially right in our beliefs. We just really don’t know and won’t know until we pass. And at that time, if there’s no afterlife we might just cease to exist, plain and simple, and then we’ll never know.
@cagedtiger. If the atheists are correct, then we will never know because it is not possible for an inert object to have a knowledge-state. Hypothetically suppose death results in an eternal, dreamless sleep for the person who has died. How can one know one is sleeping if the person can never wake up? Perhaps Lazarus was an exception.
@ jswissman Right, that’s what I was trying to say. That if atheists are right, then we won’t ever find out what happens because we’ll have no consciousness at that point. Maybe I didn’t word myself clearly enough.

I think you just die. I think you have your last breathe and that’s it. You cease to exist. You’re nothing and there is nothing.
A lot of people believe there is, that something of us continues on.
I’m a Christian, and so I believe we get judged when we get to the other side.
If I had died that night a few months ago, I believe I would have gone on to somewhere else, hopefully not a bad place.
As a Christian, we are taught suicide is wrong, but I also believe God will take each persons’ circumstances and either codemn them, or forgive them.
It is said God won’t give you more than you can handle, but to be honest, I do have a very hard time with that.

Found this video interesting, and relevant to your question:

That is an interesting sentiment Pain! It seems a lot of people take their life to escape their memories.
I was thinking the same thing… if i were to retain my memories there would be no point on taking my life… maybe just keep the good ones? that’s wishing for too much i guess haha
People who have had an NDE say they are “just as much alive” on the other side, however they are “enhanced”.
So yes, you retain memories (evidently).
Im an atheist. I attribute NDEs to what happens when chemicals are released as the brain shuts down.
The only problem is that those with an NDE often see things they normally won’t. (aka around the accident scene, etc.)
Simply a mind shutting down wouldnt have that capability. Now would it?
I have strong belief in life after death. please send me an email, howfrail

i honestly dont know but i believe there is a heaven and a hell, but i would love to know that there is nothing after life.

@ Painnlife it’s possible that you’re right about the nde’s, but I don’t want to take the chance that they’re accurate…
Everyone’s dying to find out what happens next.

spirits are real.
They normally dont show up as “white/clear figures”.
They can and do influence people who allow them to, and true possesion does occur, and at different levels.
Ask me how I know.
I have seen it.
i can assure you, and very much so….. there is evil work as much as there is good at work.
and yes, spirits are behind it all.
“I have seen it.”

The kind of god that doesn’t exist to set the record straight – that’s what kind
and if you’re a “firm believer” you can’t change the rules – if your god says all suicides are doomed, then yes, he IS that cruel and there is no case by case assessment – he’s freaking god, he has spoken, who are you, mortal, to modify his word?
better to reject a god who cannot provide even the most modest evidence for his existence
skeptic dawg
@pain – Jackie glenn is awesome 🙂
Cosmos
Or by making you live as a slug.
“i don’t think there is much difference b/w thought and act.”
Gotta stop ya right there.
There is a HUGE difference between thinking and doing. To believe otherwise is unreasonable.
The huge difference is only in the effect it produce on society, not in the eyes of god (symbolically).
He must have reincarnated in hell; but i think he must have got a higher a position there.

but yeah, maybe its just a wish fulfilling. we couldn’t make bad, powerful people punish here so we created the concept of hell…
I don’t see any reason to assume there is any god, an afterlife, or any next or previous lives. You can fancy any idea as you please, but that doesn’t make it true.
If you only think it, it doesn’t actually occur. There is nothing difficult to grasp about that concept.
btw i wrote my original comment only for believers, according to their concepts. taking it from non-believers side is a totally different thing.
