I guess there is some truth to that. Life is hard at times. Really hard at other times and it does take courage to move forward and keep going. I pray we will all come up with the courage to go on and I hope things get better for all of us.
I’m disappointed with Camus there. It must be taken out of context because for a non-suicidal person it might take more courage to suicide that to live. The statement is inaccurate.
He’s basically saying suicide is the easy way out by virtue of choosing the path of least resistance to the individual. Most acts of bravery generally deemed courageous, we might not consider courageous in our circumstances.
There are different types of suicide which can’t all be defined like that. The Japanese samurai or a suicide bomber for example might consider it honourable and a duty.
For the average suicidal who encounters a problem that’s evenly balanced and they think it isn’t really worth living, they might make a logical choice. Then courage would be of little significance in making that decision. It’s simply a choice.
What is the definition of courage here? I always thought it was simply about facing one’s fears. Therefore, the more fear present, the more courage required. It ends up varying from person to person.
Your first paragraph makes sense in that context, but it gets kind of hard to understand after that.
Remember The Myth of Sisyphus? Camus imagined that Sisyphus felt happiness as he walked down the hill to retrieve the boulder he had just rolled down the hill and was planning on carrying back to the top to roll it back down again. For all of eternity.
@ DeathFinalFrontier I don’t know. If only Camus were here he could enlighten us. I suppose you can look at it at doing something you are afraid of rather than whether it’s what you want or whether others consider it a heroic act. A lot of people here don’t consider life courageous, some of them think it’s pointless and boring. In those circumstances can it really be courageous to live?

I hope so too.
I disagree. The only reason I’m still around is because I lack the courage to off myself. Too many unknowns keep me around… for now.
I’m betting he never tried it. It’s probably just more haughty judgment from some -ist.
