A sci-fi book I loved had a hero that crossed the galaxy and suffered many trials and tribulations just to ask the wisest creature in the universe one question.
Why was man created to suffer and die?
The creature looked deeply into the eyes of the hero, smiled, and said, “why not?”
Because two horn-dogs wanted to procreate. You were given no choice in the matter, but you are the living product of their actions, as we all are of other such dirty horn-dogs.

I really like that quote. Which book was it?
