Michelle Carter. She’s on trial for manslaughter now & everyone is calling her a cruel sociopath and a “c*nt who did it for attention” and such.
People don’t understand, they aren’t willing to understand, why someone would think death is a better option for their loved one than living in pain. It was a messed up thing to do & I think she should have consequences…but why does everyone assume she’s evil??
They just don’t understand.

The chap’s decision to end his life had already been made through his own volition because of the extreme depression he suffered from. There should be no case to answer !!!
When this story broke she was immediately judged by the pro-lifers, including ironically a lot of people here on this site.
Nobody talked about how she too had been suffering from suicidal depression for years and how maybe just maybe she thought death was the best thing. For speaking her mind, for supporting someone in ending his own pain, her life is ruined. And the righteous claim their bloodthirsty victory.
I never pass judgement on a legal case because what the media reports is a teeny tiny fraction of what is heard in the courtroom (and then there’s no guarantee the stories are very accurate).
I think the perception of society at large is that she was pressuring him when he was unsure, not being supportive of someone who was sure of their decision.
You do not push or encourage someone to do suicide, if that is necessary, then it only goes to show the person who is thinking of doing it is not prepared. Some comments here…
Yours is the judgmental attitude that makes suicidal people feel like shit. You’re free to hold the opinion that suicide is wrong, but when you start pushing that view on others, or like this example, criminalizing the act of speaking your mind, you create an authoritarian society where the minority is persecuted for having differing beliefs. Whether we’re talking about suicide or abortion (two nearly identical debates), I am staunchly pro-choice regarding what a person does with their own body, as well as the freedom to speak ones mind. But there are too many righteous people who love to throw around the word “evil” regarding any opinion other than their own.
I’m depressed and suicidal, have 1 failed attempt and have a plan already ready. I also helped some one who was suicidal on the path to recovery from clinical depression, self harm and suicide.
and I will have to repeat what I previously write down, since your so blind in pointing fingers, please read it again, slow.
>You do not push or encourage someone to do suicide, if that is necessary, then it only goes to show the person who is thinking of doing it is not prepared. <
can you pinpoint hate? evil? wrong? Where is judgment in my comment? where do I push my view on others in my comment? where do I criminalize the act of speaking?
Might be the time you do some self evaluation.
Are you even familiar with the Michelle Carter case you’re supposedly discussing, or are you just mouthing off your ignorance and general discontent like you do on other threads. L8r
I’m discussing this : people encouraging others to do suicide, in general, also goes for this case.
you :”mouthing off your ignorance and general discontent like you do on other threads. L8r”
? what ??
again, can you post some arguments, please.
who know’s a couple youngsters talking about suicide, the normal immature drama that happens everyday, just so happens he went through with it, not knocking youngsters a lot on here i more mature than i am WE KNOW THAT! 🙂 i’m sure she realizes now it wasn’t a good idea, who really knows i read the text messages and they were pretty bad, but they are text messages, you can be pretty stupid text messaging, not knowing what going on at the other end of the line is real or not, this is not the only case of people being stupid, and won’t be the last, there is a lesson to be learned here, everyone needs to be careful when talking with suicidal depressed people, i myself am not for or against suicide, i believe it is our choice as individuals, but i would never encourage it. but i could understand it, i came close myself awhile back.
While looking up the case it was mentioned multiple times in different articles that he had stepped out of the car and had second thoughts about committing suicide but she told him to get back in the car and continue with the method. That would make it seem like a crime to many people.
I agree that it’s hard to comment and make a decision about legal cases reported in the media. We don’t always get to see the whole picture.
I would love to get a meaningful discussion of the legalities and societal implications of this case as it is extremely poignant to the so-called freedoms of speech and faith. I strongly encourage people to research this particular case, and not just the sensational headlines geared at inciting emotionalism.
First of all, as others have rightly pointed out, we are talking about a kid. If we were to go into every teenager’s cellphone and prosecute them based on noncontextual half-phrases found there, half the kids in the country would be on death row. Every utterance of “Fuck off and die” would be construed as inciting mayhem and murder.
But most intriguing is the fact that in America people are supposedly granted freedom of spiritual and religious belief. Supposedly. I wish Americans would stretch their minds to allow the possibility that this girl actually believed death was the best spiritual destiny for her boyfriend. Wrap your prejudiced minds around that, Americans. Maybe this girl, like a few of us here, had forsaken the absurdity of life and embraced the concept of death as being the bringer of peace. And she advised her friend accordingly. For that, the moral majority is stringing her up, bullying her, persecuting her, and has entirely ruined her life.
I hope all of you realize that if she is convicted and punished for her words, then hundreds of people here are also on the hot seat for every time we voice our belief that death brings peace, or at least a cessation of pain. Every time someone responds to a suicidal post “May you find peace”, that could get you put in Michelle’s seat, because apparently the moral majority won’t tolerate anything short of “DONT DO IT. SUICIDE IS FOR LOSERS”
I’ve been trying to find where it has been stated that Michelle believed death would bring peace and be a better option for her boyfriend. I have found articles that stated she received mental health treatment. I’m not putting down your claim I’m just wondering if you could provide evidence that states Michelle believed death would be better for him.
There have been similar cases where someone has committed suicide due to bullying and the “criminal/criminals” were acquitted.
I believe some of the reasons charges were brought are the amount of texts between the two, the tone of the messages, and the fact that he was reconsidering his decision and she told him to go through with it. She also discussed methods and helped provide information about where he could obtain equipment to carry out his plan. (These were from the text messages released to the public.)
You cannot be charged for a crime for voicing your opinion. If someone believes death brings peace they are allowed to believe that. Telling someone “may you find peace” on an anonymous suicide forum would also not be a criminal offense. There has to be more evidence that a user helped another user commit suicide.
BTW I’m neutral on this case. I’m not a judge, lawyer, or jury member nor do I know all the facts.
There is a fine line between accepting ones decision to end their life and encouraging one to do so.
