I am an atheist too and I have a question. Since there is no god and life has no meaning why we, atheist, suffer? I think I should not care about anything, but life still hurts. WHY?
Just because we are atheist and believe in science instead of a god doesn’t mean we don’t feel. Everyone and every thing feels. If I step on my dog he yelps in pain, if you get a tattoo it hurts. I think it’s the same on the inside if someone does something shitty to me I’m gonna feel sad or mad or something. Just because I don’t believe in a god doesn’t mean my life has no meaning. There are many atheists who have made a difference in the world. We suffer because we have someone or something that just won’t let us be at peace yet.
I dont think ANYONE (human) can ever know and say that there IS or ISN’T a God. That’s ridiculous no one could possibly know. Anyone that claims either way is stupid. Believe what you want to believe, sure nothing wrong with that at all. But no one can actually know or prove either way.
I have a long background with Christianity and that’s why at this moment I’m doing research for myself. I spent 27 years believed every thing I was brought up to believe in 2 years questioning weather I did or didn’t and as of the past 2 years I’ve been straight atheist so I have a lot of reading to do but. I completely agree with you on believe what you want. I have friends who are Christian fully believe everything they’ve read in the Bible other friends who believe in god but don’t believe the Bible and other friends who are atheist. I love them all the same no matter their belief. My theory is. Don’t be a dick. no matter what you do or don’t believe. Accept everyone for what they do or don’t believe in.
Yes, politeness is more important than being “right”. I’ve had my moments where I’ve gotten too enthusiastic in a debate, but how we treat each other matters most.
Yes, yes, it is a belief and there is nothing wrong with beliefs. Science is a structured process for learning, not some magical justification for every move a person makes.
Why is hard to explain without a broader context. I use a set of beliefs, thoughts, practices that are non-religious, but amount to God really. I’m seeking freedom, through oblivion or samadhi(divine bliss).
There are scientific “reasons” why mammals feel emotion, like maintaining social structures, pair bonding, child care and protection, self-sacrifice for the survival of the species or group.
Those explanations feel empty and cold to me, but I am a spiritual scientist looking for God, rather than one looking to find it’s absence. Where you see adaptation into social creatures, for survival, I might see the same thing and call it manifestation of divine love evolving us into/beyond social creatures..
I’ll tell you what I know. “God” is one of the most misunderstood and misused words ever.
In my opinion, the traditional view of religion/God is incredibly infantile and naive, and here’s why:
People sign a contract with “God” … “God, I’ll be good … I’ll come to church/temple/what-have-you every Fri/Sat/Sun, and I will pray to you daily, and in exchange, none of my family members are to die, I’m not to lose my job, and my wife is not to leave me. Sound good ? Are you cool with that ?”
Then, as is inevitable in the world of form, shit happens, and suddenly, “I’ve lost my faith. I’m now an atheist.” or “I HATE God. You are an evil sadistic prick.” Why ? Because a mortal being, who, by definition, was going to die someday, …. umm … died.
I, personally, think of God as the one unifying consciousness that manifests itself through the world of (physical, tangible) form – the flora and fauna of the Earth, for instance, among the other inconceivable vastness of the universe.
Sorry if I offended anyone (probably 95% of the population).
No, I agree. We are too often encouraged to see God as some some being who exists only to give us what we want, as long as we in return fulfill certain obligations. Religion shouldn’t be like going to the bank:
“Hey, I made my payments and maintained a good credit score! Now where’s my money?”
Exactly ! That mentality is very superficial. It doesn’t enter the realm of true spirituality. And, it sure as hell doesn’t make people happy in the long run.
Whatever created the blueprint for all life instilled within it a basic reptilian need to survive, to ensure the species. ( READ: I believe in an intelligent source for all that is, for discussions sake, let’s refer to it as “God.” FUCK religion. Useless man-made politics. Nothing more. ) That fact is responsible for my reluctance to kill myself. It’s a fight against a basic instinct to live, brain vs. Mind. Someone please take away my mind so I can leave! If “God” disapproves, perhaps on the other side, he will be so kind as to refer me to the section of The Official Manual for Living Properly as A Human on Earth that states why suicide is wrong, and that suffering isn’t. I didn’t receive copy of the manual, like pretty much every other human ever born. And don’t hit me with that crap about the bible being it, you’ll make me puke. I’ll get off my anti-religion/ pro -intelligent design soap box. Thank you for listening, there will be coffee and strychnine in the lobby as you leave the building.
I could believe that there might be something there, but not a “God” like Jeebus or Allah etc. We’re here, were conscious (although Im barely consicous right now) I’d prefer non existance personally. I won’t care if I don’t meet family members again if I never know I existed, and If meet the red tailed one then bring it on Lucifer. Burn my arse with ya poker if you like, I can take it.
Like many said above, whether there’s a god or not, every living being can suffer due to the consequences of anything that happens. I mean, the ridiculous amount of interactions that happen at every moment everywhere are bound to affect everyone in countless ways, regardless of your faith (or lack of it). If anything, i’d say atheists are more prone to suffering just because they have no way of justifying what life throws at them, at least religious people can say “god put this in my way so *insert meaning here*”.
I am (no pun intended) dying to find out what awaits. If it’s nothing, well, what is there to say? A lack of something is difficult to conceive of. I no longer fear an angry God waiting to smite me, though, and that’s good. So many theories, so many possibilities. I feel like a kid, gazing at wrapped Xmas gifts, trying to divine their contents. Except this gift would be final and non-returnable. Someone somewhere posits that what awaits is what you expect. Wow. That is an interesting concept. Anyhow. This site is becoming an obsession.

It is important to note here: I still seek death and ideate frequently. So we are in the same essential position asking WHY?
Serious question:
Why would being an atheist make a person not care? I guess I don’t see a connection.

strychnine, LOL !
Do you live in Asia ? I heard that strychnine is common there.
No, the Untied States. Yes, Untied. And I hope I spelled strychnine correctly.

HA! i nearly choked on a skittle. Sorry that made me laugh but I realise you may not have been saying that to incite humor
ME too 😛

My logic is a bit simpler. If this is hell, only some place better can await.
