Convinced? You used the “god created you” argument.
Henceforth, all your arguments are null and void.
If anything, the idea of god shows us that we are alone on this earth, and teaches us the importance of independence and community.
“He” didn’t “create us.” Our parents having sex did. The sperm found the egg and burrowed in, beginning the development of a brand new human being. Most parents are not prepared to raise an offspring, and lack both the mental and material resources to do so.
That’s why things like this website exist. We have to figure out how to make it on our own, because most parents don’t have and can’t teach us the lessons we need to learn. They mean well and try, usually, but they can’t prepare us for what they don’t even know. Most people are not lucky enough to never need those lessons… and yet, it seems to be the standard procedure of the status quo, that people just mindlessly breed and expect everything to work out just fine, just from “believing hard enough,” in an idea, as if it actually existed in real life.
Teaching people to believe in unsubstantiated claims, only reinforces the very same mindsets and mental constructs that lead people to have inflated expectations of life, and then spiral into suicidal despair, upon being profoundly disappointed that things didn’t, and won’t, work out as they were taught to “believe” that things would be.
Teaching people to believe in “God” is actually harmful. Teaching vulnerable people to expect miracles from believing hard enough in things that don’t exist… should be deemed “criminal.”
It’s too bad most people would not understand such things, and would instead, most likely prefer to protect their false doctrines, and demonize anyone who disagrees… no matter how legitimate and valid the reasons for disagreement.
It’s not really okay to just think whatever you want based on nothing at all, when that produces thinking that is not compatible with or based in actual reality.
We need to learn to thrive in this harsh world, as it actually is… not create the need for impossible magic, just to survive.
There are plenty of reasons to live; almost none of them have anything to do with any “afterlife.”
You said you’d both annoy and convince. You’ve achieved the former. You say you want to “save lives,” and prevent people from doing anything dangerous… but exploiting vulnerable despairing minds, by encouraging them to believe in nonsense, is in fact, quite dangerous.
I just felt like expressing some thoughts.
I respect your thoughts. By “convinced” I meant trying my best at changing someone’s mind at suicide, I don’t think the “god created us for a reason” or “you were born for a reason” is very convincing to anyone. And I don’t 100 percently believe in god, but I think saying god doesn’t exist it whatever you said there, Is offensive to the people on here who might look up to this God for help.
Before a thing can be understood, it must first be perceived.
People need to see the truth of their problems, at the source, so that they can most effectively manifest solutions for them.
If you obscure the problem, and tell someone that an empty ritual based on false teaching, will be what they need… you are actually contributing to the perpetuation of their problems.
Life is harsh. Waking up from the lala-land we’re raised with, is especially painful. It seems to cause all kinds of problems, for people who suddenly become aware that they’ve been living a “lie,” and motivated by things that suddenly become clear, are impossible and not real.
If you want to help people… help them deal with truth, help them learn to solve problems, help them learn to appropriately interpret the evidence, help them understand what evidence actually is… help them to become independent, in order to find a way to live this life that doesn’t require impossible things.
They need to understand, to solve. Most are here because they’re trying to figure out a way to not be suicidal… not because they want to be that way. Some are here because they have lost all hope, and simply want to share some words with those most likely to understand. People like us, who have perceived the same types of problems and disappointments and pains and despair… are the most likely to truly understand… and also the most likely to be capable of helping identify the actual problems, and pointing others toward potential solutions that they may not have otherwise perceived.
If you don’t know what the problem is, how can you help me?
If i don’t understand my own problem… how can anyone help me?
If your advice is to encourage misunderstanding of the problems, and offer false non-solutions, like “prayer,” then… are you really helping anyone?
You have to perceive the actual problem, to understand… and the most effective solutions occur at the source, not the surface. Treating only symptoms allows them to recur. Treat the source of the dis-ease… the infection… the vulnerability to certain vectors…
Build a stronger person who understands themselves, and is capable of things complex and difficult thing we call “survival.”
Sometimes the truth is just offensive, but you need to see it clearly, to have any real chance to actually solve the problems that come from having the truth obscured by flawed ideals.
If you look up to something that “may or may not exist,” instead of using the tools that actually do exist, and are available within… what do you think will happen? Which of those things seems like the safer option? Using the tools we know we can obtain? Or betting our lives on unsubstantiated fantasy?
So much of this world is just so backwards… it just constantly blows me away, how so many people rely on belief in magic and fairytale, as though such things are suitable solutions to the problems in their lives… most of which are caused by being taught to be satisfied with not understanding the world, or themselves.
Anyone who might be “offended,” well, too bad. You need to learn that reality is real, instead of doing nothing but speaking in tongues, practicing empty rituals, and hoping for miracles. Don’t wait for life to give you things. Take what you need. Make what you need. Crying into a prayer isn’t going to fix anything, and the sooner you realize that, the sooner you can get to the place where real solutions can be perceived… and then understood… and ultimately, implemented, so that you can something better than “i wish i was dead” all day. Wishing for death is no way to live. Hoping for impossible miracles is agonizing. Use your limited time to make good things happen, instead of just waiting to die.
You make good arguments =_=
I like that you want to help people… and theism is one of my pet peeves… and i’ve spent much time thinking about such things, and hoped that some of my insights would be worth showing to someone else who wants to help people, so that maybe what i understand, can help you better help more people.
I find it useful to know how to say the right things about “God,” when someone is obviously entrenched in their religious orientation toward the world… like when they are in crisis, and need to hear the right thing, just until they calm down… but eventually, when they’re ready to see the truth, and are ready to confront the source of their issues, they should.
I feel kinda bad, sometimes, because i know it can be upsetting to be confronted with reason, when reason conflicts with the world you’re familiar with.
I’m not here to make anyone feel bad about trying to help anyone. Just something about your post and subsequent comments triggered the need to verbalize some things i often struggle to express, and end up holding in, for fear of “offending” anyone.
So… do what you do. 😉
It’s nice to express your options 🙂 and I respect them.
