Sick of the city’s cold stare
Emotional branding that you’re wearing..
Can suit the curb side as you walk alone.
Maybe it’s just common sense.. Maybe it’s my faith that..
I’m needing room here to exist.
Contemplation of the sun set..
Will it bring me down to set with in..
Or maybe it’s this dirt pile..hide me from the sun’s kiss.
A struggle running from the past.
And all the foot steps that you’re hearing..
Getting closer and their closing fast.
Maybe it’s a quick death..you keep running in the end..
We are fools! Always playing by the rules! Won’t you let me loose, oh my friend?
You’re too foolish to pretend!
Cuz we are nothing but fools! This world has turned us into ghools!
And there’s nothing they can do to make us clean again.
A city night that won’t wait.
Feeling the cool air of the breezes..
Keep passing till the light of day.
Maybe I’m the shine man, maybe that’s my fate..
I’m a fool! Always playing by these rules!
I know that’s what I have to do, to make it sing again.

Yo, RT, fantastic poem, always as thought provoking and provocative as always ๐
“We are fools! Always playing by the rules!”
This line in particular struck me because it’s true, we all heed rules that were established outside of our control and many in which oppress us. By obeying these rules we really are fools. Rules are a crucial part of any society, but when they become enacted without our direct say and the rules are controversial is when it is foolish of us to obey them. Rules are established to create a more safe and just environment for the community and society, once these guidelines start to stray from that ideal and only protect a minority of privileged individuals is when they are no longer ‘laws’ but more or less ‘regulations’, which specifically ‘regulate’ the population as to fulfill the needs of the privileged class.
“Iรขโฌโขm needing room here to exist.
Contemplation of the sun set..”
This line also is significant. When you contemplate the value and point of your own existence, you begin to question everything, because subjectively, almost everything in reality pertains to you. If you don’t feel as though you belong, than other natural customs and events (i.e the sun rising) become questionable as well. Why do such things happen, when we’re in a position like this? I could also interpret that phrase as wondering what could happen ‘after the sunset’ which could be a metaphor for the ‘dark’ ‘cold’ times (phases of depression) which are represented as nighttime. By questioning the sunset you may also be questioning if the sun will rise again. When you don’t trust anything, not even nature or phenomenons as reliable as the sun rising, it makes your life seem even more mundane, hopeless and very, very lonely. Living a cynical life is intensely painful.
Really well written, well done RT, good to see you around ๐
Thanks @SB- ๐ I’m glad you liked it. That was a very good analogy.
This poem is about many things. To me, it defines how I feel when I walk the streets at night, free from the burden of other people. Nothing but the cool air and wonder.. Wonder if the sun will bring a better day. Wonder if the light will shine on me again so that I can see more clearly, my own fears and doubts about this life. But it’s important for the sun to set on the day, everyone goes back to their hole and we get to start over. It allows the night crawlers to come out and live their lives, free from the cold stare of the day walkers.
In a way.. “Always playing by the rules” is a metaphor for getting up and living life everyday (how it is now) with the world rushing and conforming to meet the day with an apology or a cynical perspective for just existing. All of us, fools for wanting more out of life but never making it better in the end. We just keep complaining we want it to end. As well as all things that would otherwise bring enlightenment.
The last few lines.. “Maybe I’m the shine man, maybe that’s my fate.. I’m a fool!”
Basically means that I have to live this life, I have to love it, I have to accept it for how it is and see it till the end. I have to be the one who sees past the darkness for the sake of tomorrow’s sun rise.
๐ thanks for the comment!
Hope you’re doing well!
