I dont’ know about targets and killing and punishment, but perhaps all three are real and need to learn to live together.
Well, to find your true self you have to go as far back as you can. P4 is observing P3, P5 is observing P4, etc. You just have to go back far enough until you find someone that is not or cannot be observed itself. That is your true self. Everything else is just your embodiment in this world, shaped by years of living here.
