I like to read…
Every once in a while I read a book that’s just awesome… Â One of those that makes me think, “damn, I wish I wrote that”!
It would be an awful shame if when I came across one of these and didn’t recommend it to at least someone… Â So I’m doing that now.
I looked on my torrent site and couldn’t find the eBook… Â But here’s a link to the audio book, free.

Thank you
Sometimes fiction is the easiest way…definitely the more enjoyable. If my public library doesn’t have a copy…and they should since it is over 20 years old…then I will have to ask them to buy me a copy. Definitely sounds like something I would like to read. Appreciate the link…but audio? not my idea of reading. haha
Yeah I found a hard copy in a thrift store. 🙂
Out of curiosity, I looked it up on Wikipedia:
“A coming of age story narrated by Gus Orviston, the oldest son in a fishing mad family. Frustrated with life in Portland, Oregon and the constant bickering of his bait fishing mother (Ma) and tweed-wearing, fly-fishing father (H2O) over the proper way to fish, Gus moves to a small cabin in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range. Once there he begins to follow an “ideal schedule” that has him doing nothing but eating, sleeping and fishing. In the course of doing nothing but what he loves to do he begins to notice the scars that humanity has inflicted on the river and woods he loves. Gus also goes through the traumatic event that occurs as he is fishing of wrestling with a dead man, and through it is able to realize how wrong his “ideal schedule” really is. As he wrestles with what to do he begins to relate with the people in his neighborhood, and discovers a beautiful fisher woman that helps him discover that there is more to life than just fishing.”
It sounds interesting… and the online index shows that it’s on-shelf at the local Library. Nice.
Its awesome. The author also wrote a book of short stories called River Teeth.
I’d like to find that one. Looks like I’ll have to buy it, the pirates must not be interested.
They also made this into a movie, which I’ve seen.
Does no justice to the book.
Hey distant.road
Must be nice to have such a good library. I’ve checked mine as well. No such luck. One thing I have noticed…the most controversial or the best books always seem to get stolen from the library. The good news is they will buy it if I ask.
@HealingInHisWings
Thrift store? Seriously? I think I might have found a new hobby. Thrift shopping. I generally don’t like to shop at all….but browsing through books might make all the difference. And hey…maybe I’ll find a new sweater while I’m at it. 😀
Hi Amakua… The library nearby is part of a local cluster of libraries… which, in turn, is part of a regional group. If the book isn’t available locally, we can place an inter-library loan request to get the book. It’s a pretty good system. There are a few copies in the local cluster and, fortunately, one is on-shelf.
Amakau…
Yup… Where I live there’s a rescue mission store where people donate things like clothes and books.
Im wearing designer clothes that I never could have afforded in the retail shops.
And yup, can find some real gems in the book section.
we have interlibrary loans as well….but for you it is on the shelf? Don’t tell me how it ends eh? haha I’ll try and be a good sport and say…enjoy. 😀 but they don’t have sweaters and tea cosies in the library…now do they? ahaha
Either of you read anything by Paulo Coehlo? Just curious.
@Healing….see the name is getting shorter and shorter. ha
I live a lifestyle of voluntary simplicity…myself. So I try not to buy anything that I don’t absolutely need. But books have a special draw of their own. I wasn’t being facetious or ingenuine when I suggested I might find a sweater as well. I was merely being optimistic. I need a new sweater…I want a new book. 😀
Paulo Coehlo? No, don’t recognize the name. What book of his would you recommend and I’ll give it a shot?
No sweaters and tea cosies… but one of the local libraries is running a test-program that sells coffee and little snacks. With less people getting physical books, overdue fine income is down so they’re testing other sources of revenue.
As for Paulo Coehlo, I read “O Vencedor está Só” (The Winner Stands Alone) not too long ago… maybe last summer? It was an interesting read.
Most movies, unfortunately, never do justice to the book. In fact, there are some books that I never would have read had I seen the movie first. Sad but true.
Amakua, I didn’t think you were being facetious, lol…
And that optimism makes a the difference sometimes.
Some don’t try and feel sorry for themselves…
Others go outside and look around…
Sometimes God has good things for you…
But ya gotta go out and look!!! 🙂
I have read The Winner Stands Alone…actually I have recently read all of his books. My library bought them for me. hehehe
The two that stood out for me though were Eleven Minutes (warning explicit content) and Manuscript Found in Accra.
Sooo D.R. How many languages are you fluent in? Portuguese isn’t a very common one for sure.
The movie literally left out the “”hook” which makes the book so wonderful.
Oh Jeez Louise….now you’ve gone and done it Healing. You said the “G” word. lol
I am Gnostic…but any use of the “G” word around here seems to start a war. Be careful how you fling it around. 😀
JK You can talk about God to me all you like. I AM God. How about you?
lol, Amakua… That is true. It was translated. Granted… Translated content runs the risk of not having a perfect language-to-language conversion…. but it’s typically sufficient for my purposes.
Too often, HealingInHisWings, movies take poetic license and get a little creative in what hits the big screen…. deleting, adding, modifying, etc. I understand creative license… but some take it to new highs.
Yesterday, I wrote that religious discussions often cause issues around here. Four hours later, we had a religious discussion and issues. For whatever reason, SP doesn’t handle religion (or the lack of it) well.
@ D.R.
I was actually being spiteful. ahaha I am jealous of people who can speak or read more than one language well. My ex was fluent in 5 languages with a smattering of others. Smug bastard. 🙁
I told him though. I am bi-lingual as well. I am proficient in both English and Profanity. ha
As for religion? I am not religious. I think that religion is the problem…and perhaps not the solution some think it is. But God is real. I AM real. Oh yeah…and I love Jesus…and a whole bunch of other’s who espoused the Christ Consciousness. Now I’ve done it !! haha But as I said. I AM Gnostic. I am not religious.

Yeah, I know… Its the same no matter what forum I frequent. Some actively seek threads where the author expresses faith and attack.
Some live and let live…
Others are offended by any reference to God.
I don’t understand why. You guys are perfectly civil, but some react in a way that doesn’t make sense to me. I respect the belief or lack thereof of others. If they ask me to go away when I’m in their thread, I do s out of respect. I don’t know. It seems like the said offense is spiritual.
lol, Ama… I can speak enough Spanish to get me by. Back in high school, I spoke Spanish really well but, after years of non-usage, my Spanish-speaking skills have gone down. Of course, there is now Google Translate… which works for dozens of languages. 🙂
I try to keep my profanity in check. Even before I became a Christian, I was never a big user of profanity. When I did use it, however, my friends knew I was being totally serious about whatever sentence I used it in. I just didn’t use it that much so, when I did, I wasn’t kidding.
I don’t judge others by their religious views… Doing so means putting a wedge or an obstacle between people… which would go against the compassion and warmth that many religions preach.
I think, HealingInHisWings, that there is a certain stigma attached to religious conversations. People often assume that, if you’re speaking about religion(s), that you’re going to start preaching to them and they don’t want to hear it. Walls and barriers go up and the rest is history.
Here on SP, the dynamics are often a little different. People often find this site in a time of crisis (let’s face it, many of us found SP via Google on a day when things weren’t going well) and the last thing they want to hear in their time of devastation and torture is something like “God loves you.” It creates a HUGE disconnect between how they’re feeling and the philosophy of the particular religion being cited. I can respect people’s feelings and I think there is a time and a place for certain subject matters.
When is it preaching and when is it speaking your Truth? I don’t mind a good religious debate…but for me the subject of God is sacrosanct. You see….I AM God…and what people usually refer to as God…for me is Source. God is just a name used to sum up the Source of Creation. ahem….imo. 😀
Bottom line….everyone needs something to believe in. Some are good and positive…others are not. That is the only difference. I refuse to go to the dark side…I’ve been there banging on the gate for years….LET ME OUT OF HERE !!! And then I just woke up one day and realized that I was the one holding the Key.

I agree with you, Ama… and I definitely don’t mind an energized spiritual discussion. By discussion, I mean an exchange of ideas where one or more of the participants might walk away with a new piece of knowledge or, at a minimum, a respect for the other participants. It’s often difficult to find that type of discussion.
In regard to the preaching vs. speaking the Truth, I understand your point. As a Christian, I want to show people the light and discuss God’s plan. I know enough, however, to know that timing is everything. There might come a point in subsequent conversation where we discuss religion and spiritual philosophy… It just might happen later as opposed to first-thing in the interaction.
“When is it preaching and when is it speaking your Truth?”
Doesn’t that manipulation of the term “truth,” sort of defeat the purpose of the real definition of that word?
There is only one Truth. If your way of interpreting it does not match The One Truth, then it is not Truth.
For whatever reason, i just triggered myself to think of Steven Colbert’s word: “Truthiness.”
But in accordance with “freedom of speech,” people are allowed to call things Truth, when they are not. I guess lies and assumptions are covered under the 1st amendment? I know slander and inciting riots isn’t… abusive hate speech isn’t… and you damn sure can’t just say whatever you want to a judge in a court room…
But apparently, you can go around claiming all sorts of things that literally no one has any way of determining are true, using fear (terrorism!) to convince people to obey “commandments,” and that’s okay.
It’s astonishing, to me, that our own gov’t (and not just the US), the masters of using fear to control a populace, goes around calling people “terrorists,” and using that as an excuse to wage preemptive wars for profit… and people say it’s “patriotic” to endorse such practices. And if you don’t go along with it, you’re scum!
Can anyone tell me why? Or do you at least understand it, without having the right words to express it?
If there were only one Truth….then all you billions of others would be redundant. I believe I said it was my Truth. If you don’t stop tearing absolutely everything apart btw….what will you be left with? I’ll stick with my fairytales and lollipops. How is your Truthiness working for you? haha

I’m a christian as well.
People have asked me in the past why I don’t go to a Christian forum and then I’ll fit in.
Like the bible says. Who needs a physician but those that are sick?
We must be all things to all people.
A child of God could stay in his/her comfort zone…
But the NEED isn’t there.
The need is at ground zero.
It is when they are at their weakest when some people finally open up and give God a chance
HealingInHisWings: I don’t think you need to go to a Christian forum to fit in… and your comments about the physician and one’s comfort zone are right on. While I may be reserved in communicating my Christianity, that does NOT mean that you or anybody else should be that way, too. You make a solid ambassador and I hope you use that ability offline (the “real world”) in addition to online.
There are a lot of people in this world who need help… and we’re thankful in 2014 to have a variety of ways to share information.
Hey Healing….I meant no disrespect to Xtians. I was one once. And what you said is absolutely true. It makes it hard though when you are trying to save someone from their own negative thoughts…and you can’t get to the one that is open…because others continue to shut you down.
I guess misery does love company. Me I like it much better since I came to the LIGHT. Ah well….it is the insidious nature of the dark side. Personally I like this quote better. “Physician….heal thyself.” That is the only difference. I’ve just cut out the middle man you could say. 😀

Lol I love this is a Torrent file!
1 Corinthians 3:13
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
It comes down to faith.
Believing in the unseen.
“If you don’t stop tearing absolutely everything apart btw….what will you be left with? ”
The deepest and clearest possible understanding of The Truth. I’ve already invested and lost and spent and missed out on so much, for the sake of tearing things apart to understand as much as i can, as well as i can… i can’t stop now, and just waste all that effort. It’s probably too late to do anything else. Tearing things apart to see as deep into them as they go, is one of the primary reasons why i understand the things i try to explain to people. I have realized that so many of the underlying causes of so many of the negative effects this world and its inhabitants produce, are just wrong. I knew i needed to go to the source, to understand how to fix things… and i quickly learned, in that endeavor, that it’s something most people won’t, or can’t do. In some ways, people like me are humanity’s only hope of correcting itself before it’s too late. But at the same time, i realized that i don’t even have to care what happens to humanity, because i won’t be aware of it anymore, after i’m gone. None of us will be. And i think that makes it easy for most of us to just do whatever, without worrying about the problems we create and leave behind for the next generations. That’s why we’re in the mess we’re in… which is highly beneficial for the very lucky few, and highly detrimental for almost everyone else.
a better answer might have been: “quantum truth.” Or quantum particles. Utter disintegration. Ultimate dispersal.
An entirely deconstructed world, where nothing is hidden or immutable.
Sometimes, in order to build what you want, you have to first dismantle what exists.
Of course, i’m just taking this to the extreme here. I think we can probably keep a lot of the pieces and incorporate them into the next iteration… you know, if there’s anyone left to build anything.
Quantum is it? Well that brings me to my all time favouritest book. In Canada it is a word….I swear ! That would have to be “What The Fuck Do We Know” or what the bleep for the faint-hearted and profanity challenged.
I had no real issues with consciousness or spirituality…it was the nuts and bolts or science that I had a problem with. This book should be called Quantum Physics for Idiots. I would have read it years ago. As it is I had to wait for a friend to bring it to me…and I’ve yet to return it. The mark of a truly good book…I swear.
Damn I swear a lot 😀
I like the meaning of the word “quantum.”
The least amount of something that can still justifiably be called that something… aka “the smallest possible unit of measurement.”
I also like the word “phantasm.”
And i like the interplay between those two words.
If you combine them, you get something like “the smallest amount necessary to make you believe it exists.”
