I know a lot of people don’t eat meat but I’d perfer eating animals than plants.. Animals kill each other and hurt each other. Plants on the other hand make their own food, they don’t kill or hurt.. They’re completely peaceful life forms. Well.. Most of them..

haha, the anti-vegetarian argument. I like it.
I was watching a programme on Namibia. The place has got some freaky plants. Welwitschia can live up to 2,000 years and only produces two leaves which last a lifetime. I feel like going up to one and saying your 2000 years old and your a plant.
Plants can be mean. They slowly kill off all the weaker plants to get the nutrients and sunlight. If you watch speeded up footage from the ground, the plant world is a violent place.
There’s also deadly cacti in Namibia. If you start a fire with one such cactus, the smoke from it will kill you. Oddly enough, people in the southern US states use specimens from that family of cacti as garden borders. They have pretty red flowers.
This ahole world is fucked up isn’t it -_-
Nah, most plants are peaceful towards each other – some add nutrients back into the soil that other plants need to survive, while those other plants add the nutrients that the first plants need to survive. It’s a cooperative balance as much as a competitive one.
What about fungi?
Fungi in the redwood forests of California has been shown to contribute directly to the growth of the redwood trees, while the redwoods contribute nutrients back to the mycelial matrices in the soil – it’s a funky weird cooperative circle, but each species depends on the other.
The plants have self awareness and eventually they’ll reclaim the earth. The tomatoes will have their revenge and we will be powerless against them.
lorax, that reminds me of something i read the other day (while investigating the notion of symbiosis), about some scientist who has strong feelings about Darwin’s model being incomplete (i have to agree), and that it’s not so much competition driven, as it is based on symbiosis and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Ill take a spoonfull of amoebas 😉
It sucks that I’m order for us humans to survive we have to hurt and kill :/ why can’t we just eat rocks or something :/
Rocks will destroy your teeth.
The amount of resources a human needs over the course of your life is unbelievable. It just keeps getting worse as the years go by. Some people go to the bathroom ten times a day and take two showers.
those bastards. 🙂
@clevername: I’d agree with him. Ever heard of companion planting for crops? You throw some alfalfa or clover in with the wheat and barley and the soil gets amended naturally due to the presence of the companion plants. That’s generally how ecosystems find homeostasis.
so, essentially, while “PvP” (person vs person) has significant relevance, the more important thing is “GvG” (group vs group)… teamwork, cooperation… and in this way, a team of more effectively cooperative, but individually inferior beings, is capable of defeating a team of “rambos” (superior soloists who thrive in 1v1 situations, but won’t work with their team). Kinda like how a pack of hyenas can take down a lion, but a lion will destroy any hyena 1v1. A group cooperating toward the acquisition of shared resources, is often far more effective than a single individual, and has more room for error.
I’ve probably heard of companion planting before, but i suppose i never gave it much thought. I pretty much stuck to the stuff like “you can’t have male and female cannabis anywhere near each other, or you’ll get seeds… so you need to “sex” the plants as soon as possible, and remove all the males, preferably without shaking pollen all over the place. And when you get a really good male, you use that one to pollinate your best females, or ones with desired features, to replenish seed-stock and create hybrids.”
Yea but, animals that you eat, like cows or few weeks old chickens rarely hurt other animals. Given that they are allowed to live in a natural environment of course.
🙁
But hey! You can always become a fruitarist!
” Some people go to the bathroom ten times a day and take two showers.”
Well that probably doesn’t matter unless if your area is very dry. Driving a car causes a lot more pollution than sitting in a shower.
I live in the desert. And driving a car is another thing that is done by humans. Like I said, human produce so much waste and demand so much of the earth’s resources it’s unbelievable.
