I’ve just been thinking a lot about religion these past… Well, years honestly. I’m from sweden. In case you didn’t know, sweden isn’t the most religious place on earth. But that’s not the point. I’ve just lately been wondering a lot about God. You know that being that pretty much controls everything and is everything. I dunno it all just seems… Too good to be true. This being that loves us and is all good and all knowing. It just dosen’t make sense. Why would this being allow for this to happen. Or maybe we just have ourself to blame.
But I see religion (christianity in my case) as a story. Not as facts or as something thats real but simply as stories. Because that’s all it is. Stories. In the past, life was grim. It was tough. That’s why people needed to believe in something greater than them selves. It was the only way to pull through. That’s why someone invented these stories about God. That’s still why people believe in these stories.
But just because they’re just stories, it doesen’t mean that they haven’t had a big impact on the world. People die everyday because of these… Stories. It’s so stupid how people kill over this. There have always been war over this. Right now we have these fucking ISIS guys.
But I’m sidetracking. What I wanted with this post was to find out what you think.
Does God exist?

Not a man alive can answer that question definitively.
I personally believe that one does exist. For most of my life, I was, at best, a sort of idiosyncratic Deist. Now I’m a Christian. But I can understand why others don’t believe.
God exists within the imaginations of those who believe in Him.
People like stories, and legendary tales like Star Wars, Santa Claus and God are all popular stories that people take comfort in.
“It easier to fool people than it is to convince people they’ve been fooled”. – Mark Twain (attributed).
There is no God, Nobody making decisions it’s all about nature, man makes up all these religions, it’s the universe that’s in control and it’s not really in control, that’s how the universe rolls.
I don’t believe in God.. I think it is just stories people made-up, because they’re scared about what happens when we die. They don’t want to believe that it’s just… over.
MaybeElena, Correct! we are born with the instinct to survive even after we die!!!! how corny is that? 🙂 what’s scary is very intelligent people in big positions believe in such nonsense. but like kissing babies if they didn’t they wouldn’t be popular telling people the truth. everyone likes the idea.
I also used to be baffled at how intelligent people can be so sure there’s a god. Open to the possibility? Ok, sure. Absolutely certain there’s a god? That seems like a huge leap of faith. Until I learned that we are primarily emotional creatures. Appeal to someone’s emotions, and you can convince them of anything. Use logic and you can come up against some serious cognitive dissonance. People will deny what’s staring them in the face if it conflicts with their beliefs. Mind blowing really.
Rocketman, why should faith be divorced from intelligence. We humans are so arrogant in our extremely limited knowledge (stop and think how limited and primitive we really are – think about what we’re going to look like to those a thousand years in the future) and yet we are so sure that something doesn’t exist simply because we BELIEVE it doesn’t exist, and anybody who says it’s been proven doesn’t understand real science. No real scientist would ever claim to be able to prove a negative. No real scientist would ever claim to be able to use non-existent evidence as evidence. You can point out a lack of evidence, but you cannot point out the presence of non-existence. There are plenty of religious scientists.
Btw, I don’t see where anybody in this thread claimed that it has been proven God doesn’t exist, but I have certainly seen people make that claim in other places many, many times.
God does exist. What we do during this day and time will someday far off in the future be a story as well….but that doesn’t mean that we were never real or never actually here living in this time. The reason that you can’t understand why in the world this being would love us so much when He absolutely has no reason at all to love us… is because our humanly way of thinking is not the same as his thinking. We cannot understand his ways completely.
He does exist. He is very much real. There’s nothing wrong with people who question him and why he let’s certain things happen to us if he loves us so much? Believe me, my mom just committed suicide a month ago by shooting herself to the head…. that question of why would He let this happen definitely went through my mind. All I can really pull from it is with no suffering there would never be any compassion. It’s says in the bible that He blesses those who mourn and He comforts them.
God exists.
Short comment and to the point.
nothing else to add. All else is just window dressing and subject to interpretation.
… except that there’s no actual evidence to interpret to support the claim “god exists”.
We could equally and confidently say that “Harry Potter and Santa Claus exist” … we have similar popular writings to point to as “evidence” but little else.
That said, I’m good with people believing in these things if they choose … but claiming to KNOW is a whole new realm that requires evidence. I think I can confidently say, that there is no positive physical evidence that can even suggest a god as the only explanation/answer.
In short – anyone can claim anything if they’re not required to demonstrate the facts to support the claim.
truth dawg
There is … not now, not then and … not likely ever ANY evidence to suggest ANY god exists … if one does exist … and this is the absolute most unlikely chance, it would not be anything like the christian god or the god of the bible/torah/kuran … those “gods” without doubt do NOT exist.
So if there were anything that could be called a hod in existence – it would be unlike anything know of described to, or by, man … ever. It would be a deist-type god that has no real concern for humans … nor would it care who you slept with or if you masturbated.
you. are. welcome 😀
knowledge dawg
I believe in God. I try to do good to others and my self. Even if don’t always succeed i mean well. It’s not just about the stories, i think religion is about living your life to your full potential and do good to the world. Some of us don’t do that intentionally or accidentally. Personally i believe in Him cause i find peace when i pray. Of course this is a long conversation and i don’t want to preach here. Just do as you feel.
No, Papyrus honey, there isn’t a god. All the gods which people used to believe in are now considered mythology. You know, all those Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. One day the current set of gods will be as well. Every single thing we know with certainty about life and existence contradicts anything which is produced as “evidence” of a god. Humans have a need to have this belief, otherwise a death which ends in nothing is just too scary and unimaginable to comprehend.
The “need” for humans is the “comfort” in “knowing” that god created us flawed and incapable of “living without sin”. But the reality is god/religion allows humans to shirk their responsibility of their mistakes … how convenient, dontcha think? Christians go the extra mile in providing a scapegoat in their Christ character. This is nothing more than a substitute for the previously required blood sacrifices of older gods … how nifty that they’ve used a human blood sacrifice to heap their responsibilities onto. At least they’re no longer slaughtering goats in droves for this purpose. :/
If one wants to “believe” in a god – one is free to do so … but that believer is still responsible for his/her actions on earth and to his/her community – no magic can absolve you of your responsibility or the ensuing consequences.
I think I love you, ZeldaSky 😛
