I read somewhere that health care professionals have one of the highest rates of alcohol abuse, smoking and other habits that they regularly tell their patients not to do. It’s not just you. And it’s not just the health care profession. I think every human who isn’t living in a shielded fantasy world is a hypocrite to some degree. How many times do we say “good morning”, how many times do we smile, how many times right here on this site do we tell others not to give up hope? Hypocrites all of us
Not personally applying the knowledge does not invalidate it or diminish the potential positive results on others. If anything, personal experience can provide insight.
You might be surprised at how many people were drawn to psychology through personal experiences, in an attempt to help others.
I would love to get into that field, even part time, doing something like a parent partner or some such thing. But I understand how you feel. I can barely hold myself together some days. I have to agree with Night in Atllantis, though. *Good, caring * health care professionals are damn hard to find, IMHO. And you’ve walked a mile in their shoes; you can empathise in a way that others just can’t. Or some others just refuse to.
Go for it.

Being human does not make you insincere, what counts is intentions.
and also in an attempt to better understand themselves and others.

Are you intending to get a PhD? You can’t really help people without a license in that field
Why do you need a PhD? You don’t have to prescribe meds to help people.
I don’t know why but to become a licensed psychologist you need a phd. I didn’t come up with these rules. Licensed psychologist are still called dr.
