I’ll cut right to the chase. When it’s time to say goodbye to a pet, it can be soul crushingly unbearable.
Cats are wonderful loving souls and are terrific pets, very easy to take care of for the most part. They grow on you quickly and are a lot of fun. Yes, I have major depression, and I have two cats. They are my life.
I had major depression but was able to beat it years ago, having said that I think cats are excellent emotional support animals, I like that they’re very easy to take care of as well. my top piece of advice is get pet insurance, it’s low cost and is a good investment.
I’m personally more fond of my dogs than my cats, but both are relatively excellent. The downside with cats is the litter box, and the danger of letting them outside. For my cats, they are indoor only, because every outdoor cat I’ve gotten hasn’t made it through a year. I feed a few neighborhood cats, when I see them.
Cats enjoy a sedentary lifestyle, so if that matches you then it’s a good fit.
Cats are great. But my advice is to do research first (read up on their needs, average cost, pros vs cons, etc). They’re fairly independent compared to dogs but they still need to be taken care of, so make sure you’re prepared for that.
Major depression? Yes, I once did and I had cats. I still do. Have the cats, that is. A word of caution, a bit of advice? I have seen heartbreaking neglect and burdens put on cats by family members under depression. As a counter measure, I quietly took an oath to each cat to treat it well. It is an oath I take seriously. The rewards inside me from taking fine care of my cats, emotionally and physically, are very good. If a well intentioned person having cats later sees later they hurt the cats, the small innocents that they are, often trauma and/or neglect victims themselves, the person will have strong guilt. We don’t need that. Yes I recommend cats to anyone who is willing to understand them, who can provide for them what they need. Those who truly, truly, love their cats will find self love, love, and solace, and more.
