I was talking a few people on here the other night, and it set me thinking that maybe I could make a massive difference when my time is up…
At the moment suicide has a negative stigma attached to it, with the stereotype of the highly emotional, desperate victim making a final call for help. This may also be why it affects so many friends and relatives as they feel guilty they missed this cry for help before it was too late. Lets look at the other other side, the rational unemotional decision that you should be able to control at least one thing in your life.
I know in my own case, I have come to a logical unemotional decision after much thought. Partly because I do not see myself as part of this world, and partly because I do not take any enjoyment from it. I will finish Uni with massive debt caused by the government, who will then take massive chunks of what I earn and spend. And the more I earn the more they will take… Oh and off course that money they take will be used to give money to those that can’t be fucked to work. Oooo and then they want me to carry on doing this until I am 70? And the country is in stupid debt so the government is going take more and more money??? Ok, yes I will bend over and let you rape me for all I got ‘cuz otherwise you will send your police after me.
Fuck that people, I am so outta here, I can’t be part of that society… Anyways, back to my ideas. I was thinking maybe its time that someone actually spoke out about suicide, I plan to make a “video suicide note” before I go and upload it to youtube (yay!). I was thinking it was about time that someone spoke out and ask for the changes. Here are my current thoughts:
1. The stigma attached as discussed about
2. That you have to declare any mental health problems on job applications etc so if you seek help you risk your future careers/insurance/loans etc
3. That people can’t talk about something they don’t understand… maybe it should be added to the national curriculum as a communication thingy. So basically everyone learns the basics of being able to listen to someone and empathsise with them
4. That maybe suicide/an end should be avaliable by doctors certification/prescription to ensure that a) it is not botched b) painless. This would be for those making a logical rational decision.
What do you guys think?

You’re right about the debt thing but it’s not as bad as you think. You can and will eventually pay it off, it just takes a lot of work.
My brother in law went to med school and was over $100k in debt before he became a certified doctor (at the age of 28). It took him over 10 years to pay off the debt but now he’s doing fine.
Everybody who works gets screwed over by taxes. That’s just the way it is. Don’t even get me started on that topic…
“That’s just the way it is.” – Why should it be that way?
hehe. I didn’t make the rules but I do understand them. Nobody ever said things were going to be fair or easy.
Its enough to drive a man to drink. I am now ‘over qualified’ for jobs. Next they will be telling me I’ve been replaced by one of those Japanese robots.
Do you ever watch those nature programs and see how tough life is for animals living in the wild? They seem to spend a lot of effort chasing down a meal, avoiding becoming another animals meal, finding a mate, and just surviving on a day to day basis. I don’t think humans have it much better.
I guess it’s who you know not what you know.
Look at Nick Cage. He is one of the highest paid actors. What’s so good about him? He’s the most uninteresting person ever. I mean if you saw the guy in the street it would be the most underwhelming experience. I fail to see what his skill really is because it’s certainly not acting. Every movie he plays a drunk depressed guy. They should pay me millions to do that, I certainly have more experience than he does.
That man puts me to sleep.
Before I get a backlash, I’m sorry to all the Nick Cage fans on SP. At least I now know why your on SP.
Raising Arizona was pretty good. He also failed to pay the Govt. millions in taxes. That’s admirable, right?
I’m sure it wasn’t because he was taking a moral stand. That’s just another reason to dislike the man. Not only has his monotone voice and tedious acting become the standard by which movies are judged, he hasn’t given anything back. That’s bad karma and I for one hope karma catches up with him when America no longer has interest for drunkenness and depression a role he has become typecast.
His Karma will run over his Dogma.
Nice wordage again.
Well played.
Stolen from a bumper sticker. I find many pearls of wisdom affixed to the rear ends of passing motor vehicles.
So back to the original post… Good idea? Bad idea? Any other requests that should be added to the list?
As I am here, I’m going to answer 4
What you are talking about is euthanasia.
It is available in some countries for the terminally ill. I agree that once it gets to a stage where a persons quality of life becomes inadequate, they should be given the choice of dignity.
The difficulty is that many of the people who think of suicide may suffer from a mental health illness. Some of the people on here have attempted and are thankful they were unsuccessful. How can someone think rationally when they don’t have the ability to think clearly at all.
If a person who is no afflicted wants to end their own life, they can do so painlessly without professional assistance. There is too much of am abuse factor if it was made lawful. Governments want to be seen as promoting life.
As with everything, what is normal, the difference between right and wrong is whatever the majority deem it to be. It is not always fair but any other system implemented is also likely to be unfair if not more so.
It is a shame when failure to conform to social conventions preclude you from living. When the armed forces return home from conflicts abroad, they are welcomed back as heroes and not murderers because what is in a countries economic interest is what people hold close to their hearts. Just as you moan about the welfare system. I have worked for the last 7 years and have nothing to show for it. Pimps and drug dealers have more than me because the misery they cause is tolerable to some. That’s when it is time to leave but I don’t have the money.
The reality is, no religious or moral principle can define morality because society soon diverts when their is a clash with what they perceive to be their own economic or other interest. The problem is that the average idiot or self serving dictator seems to have set rules by which we must all abide.
@ countingdown; I would venture to guess that 99.9% of people who are not suicidal would tell you that suicide is a bad idea. So if you put out a public service announcement arguing the merits of killing yourself your audience will most likely disagree with you. What do people say to you in real life if you mention suicide as an option?
Suicide seems to be condoned only in special circumstances, like if you’re suffering from a terminal illness or if you’re Japanese. (Preserving you honor).
If you do the deed and leave behind a video note people will most likely think you were confused and irrational despite how “unemotional” your decision might have been.
Btw, sorry for jacking your post.
We basically said the same thing but emigrating to Japan seems like a good idea. Ordering sushi might be a problem though.
One more thought: You can’t change other peoples rigidly held beliefs regarding suicide by leaving a video note behind. If anything you’re probably going to reinforce the negative sigma they already hold. I wish you the best either way.
*stigma* not sigma. (My spell checkers off).
SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSHI.
Hi countingdown,
I actually had a similar thought recently. My thought was: as a depressed woman in the US, I am effectively a broken/non-functioning member of society. I cannot hold a job because every time i try, the stress destroys my carefully propped-up health and sanity. I feel I cannot have children because of my depressive family history and my husbands addiction family history…plus we are barely managing to feed ourselves much less afford a child! I legally own nothing but a salvaged 99 Honda civic worth $200 max. I live 3000 miles from my depressive mother and autistic father, and the rest of my family and childhood friends…I suppose I could go on and on with reasons why my existence is only a burden to my family, state, nation, world…and perhaps that existence, in the act of destroying it, could serve some real effective Purpose in this f’ed up world. I thought of the Vietnam war protestor who self-immolated himself in front of the presidents advisors and legislators. He carried his newborn child with him, but onlookers managed to convince him to hand the baby to safety before he did it. This tragic act was noticed, and legislators admitted to being greatly impacted by what they witnessed, but the reality, even then, was that this act was dismissed by most as the desperate act of a madman and other more sustained protest movements and the simple economic losses of Vietnam were what actually convinced the US to withdraw. These days, with the explosion of the population and the depressed and desperate masses, a video suicidecast
…would be immediately removed and almost universally condemned by all the normals who don’t get depression, the depressives who are hurt by the death of a fellow sufferer ( like I feel for you), and educators and parents that know that every time a suicide appears in the media, it is garunteed to be quickly followed by 2 + other suicides by folks who follow your example. Don’t do it. For you, for me, for all the depressed kids out there who need survival stories, not just another tragedy ♥
