This probably isn’t the place to ask this question, but if there’s anyone out there who’s happy to be alive, can you explain how? There’s so much suffering, pain and cruelty out there… Even if you’re not a victim, how can you be happy knowing that others are? Misery will always exist, humans will always hurt and abuse others, this whole game we call “life” is rigged with injustice, corruption and pain. Just look around you. I’m not necessarily saying we should all kill ourselves, but why do so many people embrace life like it’s a gift?

I wish I could answer this as ‘one of those people’ but, I think they just have a totally different perspective on life. A positive one at that. And they’re capable of dealing with it. Maybe they haven’t experienced what other people have to go through daily. Maybe they can’t even put themselves in our shoes. Maybe they don’t question life like we do or even have a second thought about it. But, I bet they all have their moments too.
Life isn’t a gift. No one “gave” it to us, because there is no one out there, no one watching, no one helping. It’s most likely a complete freak accident that life on earth even happened. If you read about the history of the world you’ll see this. That evolution could have gone a completely different way. All anyone can ever know for sure is that they are alive right now. More likely than not, there is no “beyond” and no afterlife. When we die, that’s it, we will cease to exist, consciousness and all, no spirit, NOTHING.
…So really, we’ve got this life and that’s it. Yeah, some people take it for granted and treat their fellow humans unfairly. But YOU have absolute control of your own life and your own destiny. If you chose to only see the misery, you will only see the misery. If you chose to only see the good, then that’s all you’ll see. Either way, you’ll be living a lie. Open your eyes and see the WHOLE world for what it is: beauty, pain, misery, love, everything. It’s all there, all around you and it’s a miracle that any of it is even here. And That, friend, is how I am happy to be alive. I keep my eyes open to see it all. I rejoice in the good and do what I can to change the bad, but accepting it all and keeping an open mind (and heart) is what really makes it bearable.
Sort of agree with what’s been said so far, but no one has dealt with the issue of having a medical condition called “depression”. From what I’ve read, “they” now think that depression is a stress reaction that forgot to turn off, causing us to stress and feel awful 24 – 7.
Given that there is good and bad all around us, I’d guess that those who aren’t depressed tend to try and focus on the good and deal with the bad. Those of us who ARE depressed much more readily see the bad.
It isn’t pure choice, but it isn’t biological determinism either. Still, I think that, for some, it can get very close to being determinism.
Humans are the result of billions of years of fortuitous indifference our bodies were created from the elements produced in dying stars shortly after the big bang, and our minds, societies, cultures and so forth are naught but evolutionary adaptations for survival. The only difference between us and less sophisticated lifeforms is our ability to reason. We have souls and thus can suffer. A lion does not live a meaningful or fufilling life because a lion is not a rational or moral agent. We were droped of here with no direction and no purpose in a world of pointless suffering and hardship.
That being said they’re are indeed beautiful things in this world. More than i could ever enumerate. Since we are here why not just enjoy the good and try to ignore the bad(not be ignornat to it however) We have all the time in the world to not exist; why not make the best of the time we have now?
Moreover i can provde an syllogistic logical argument to disporove that life is a gift.
Premise 1- To give a gift there must be a recipitant
Premise 2- Prior to our existing there was no one to receive a gift
Conclusion- therefore existance is not a gift
That being said i can’t help but to treat life like a gift and appreciate all i can ^.^
You might be a better person than most. Hence all the trouble. Don’t worry. Everyone gets what they deserve. You’ll be given great gifts. You’ll be granted anything you want. So decide what it is. Ask for it.
As for all of the misery and suffering others who don’t deserve it are going through everywhere in the world, yeah I don’t think a good person could ever be truely happy considering all that. I see your point. I’ve considered the same thing. Happiness is just a feeling. You can be happy though but realize this at the same time.
