Hmm I think depressed and mental ill chicks are sexy. And everyone knows crazy chicks are great in bed. Sorry I guess I disagree. Good post though kristink you rock on, sister. :0
call me cynical or is it nihilistic? but if we were “sexy” maybe more $ would go toward better treatments, therapies etc etc etc. we need some celebrity to shill for us. on the other hand there are plenty of folks making a damn nice living off our misery. you know the usual suspects-drug companies, hospitals, shrinks etc etc etc. unfortunately for me i am on the demand side. depressed, suicidal chick doing her part to help the economy! btw coitus you would have to ask my husband about the sex thing!
You’re right on this one kristink. The problem is that mental illness receives a disproportionate amount of funding when compared to cancer research, heart disease etc. Think about how many breast cancer fund raiser runs there are every year. Now, think about how many fund raisers there are for mental illness research. Much less funding, means fewer psychologists and therapists to help you guys. It’s still somewhat taboo to discuss.
I disagree big time. Depression will never be “cured”; it’s not a disease, and no amount of funding or research will help. Do you really think that millions upon millions upon millions of people all have a chemical imbalance in the brain that can just be fixed? Our emotions change our brain chemistry – the imbalance is *created* by depression, not the cause of it. The only thing a “cure” can do is trick your brain into thinking you’re happy when your natural self is not.
I hate the word “depression” to begin with, as it’s purely a medical term created to assure the population that it’s a “disease”. It’s really called “being sad, unhappy, and/or angry”. Want to cure your “depression”? Change everything in your life that you’re unhappy with or that brings you down. Ah, but there in lies the rub – the way modern society operates, most people cannot escape the things that hurt them. Life has become this go-go-go, earn-your-keep, job-is-more-important-than-family, never-enough-time circus, where money, power, and possessions are more important than people. It is extremely difficult for many people to live this kind of awfully meaningless and fruitless lifestyle while remaining happy (and I mean true happiness, not the delusional happiness many people convince themselves they have because they own nice things).
It’s similar to obesity. Obesity is not a goddamn disease – there is no cure, just stop stuffing your face [hey, I’m fat too]. Same with depression – there is no cure, just stop living in the circumstances that make you depressed. But again, that’s very difficult to do when the things that make us unsatisfied with life exist as core fundamentals of society that you cannot get away from.

i don’t believe that this discussion has to be all or nothing. depression is a combination of things. but it is a disease. it is called clinical depression. the depression you are describing is not clinical depression. if all i had to do to “fix” my depression was read a self help book and “find Jesus” i would have done it by now. i have suffered from depression since i was 9. i am a bit north of that now. depression has set the tone of my entire life. you don’t know how lucky you really are.
