I’ve been seeing a counselor, and I really want her to know that I cut. I need help, and I think she needs to know everything to be truly effective. But I don’t know how to bring it up. Any thoughts/personal experiences with this?
just talk , dont ask her to speak just ask her to listen , you dont have to bring it up casually , you can start from when it first happened or you can just say it out , i hope this helped :)x x
I said to my counsellor that I was hurting myself, she asked me if I was self-mutilating… Then I said yes, and that I was cutting. Don’t be afraid to tell your counsellor. She’s only able to help you when you tell her all the important things, and she won’t forbid it, because she can’t say that and she should know that self-harm is an addiction and that you just can’t stop in 1 day with an addiction. Good luck with telling her <3
Thanks for all of your replies and advice. I really appreciated them all! I told her today. It was the end of the session, but I just couldn’t stand not to talk about it. So, I just told her I was worried about going home this summer, because I feel isolated and don’t cope well. She asked how I coped. I said poorly. And she asked if I coped with self-harm. When I said yes, she asked a few other general questions and said we would definitely start with that next week. I was so relieved. Nervous but relieved and also, kind of proud of myself. I feel like this weight is lifted, and I’ll finally get help for it. Again, thanks for all the encouragement!!
I’m glad you told her 🙂 It’s important for her to know that you self-harm so she can help you better. I told my therapygroup yesterday that I self-harm. I’m glad I told them, so they just know it.
Glad you were able to get that off your chest. Like you said, if you want any shot at the counselor being effective, it’s crucial to let them in on details like this. I hope you have a great week!

A transition to the topic isn’t necessary.
You could do the ol’ “my friend wanted to know..”
Just start talking about self-harm and on the topic you could then tell him/her “well I do it and…” and just kind of casually bring it up?
