No offence kid, but your dad is wrong. Even though I’m religious and have a different perspective, I can still see why an Atheist would choose to push past these things. Mainly for what Marissa mentioned … Fun / enjoyment / pleasure. It’s part of life, that’s why we go through these things.
To learn. To experience. To grow. People grow more when they have obstacles to overcome. If life was simple and we were given everything we ever needed -we’d stagnate. We need obstacles, pain and suffering to become more than we were.
At least that’s the theory I have sometimes when I’m not beating my head against the floor and wishing it would all just go away. Hope it helps.

Life is a roller coaster, it has its ups and downs and its twists and turns. But its all about the fun of the ride.
