if it can be safely assumed that there are about 1 quadrillion ants on
earth and roughly 7 billion humans then that means that theres a 7/1 million
chance that you are a human and not an ant. And thats just ants…
The same reason they step on ants intentionally, they have no respect for them because they were raised to believe that they are better than them. It’s a disgusting perspective of life but sadly that’s how a lot of people feel. I personally refuse to intentionally kill anything for pleasure (food for survival is a different story) that is not physically harming me because a life is a life and being human doesn’t make your life any more important than that ant.
I generally leave other creatures alone, unless they encroach.
Long ago, i learned that if you control your “fear pheromone,” then flying-stinging things will usually leave you alone. The trick is to just not fear it. This is understandably more difficult for those allergic.
As for ants… i’ve never been one to take the glass to them. I surely did so a couple times as a child, but it always caused me to feel something like: “wow, that’s horrible, i shouldn’t do this.” But if i find them in the house, in my food or on my person, they’re toast. Those are problems i have the capacity to solve, and “it’s just an ant.” There are a quadrillion of them, anyway. If there was a non-fatal way of solving the problem of them encroaching on me and my stuff, that did not cause or risk multiple ants biting me in unison, i’d probably try to use that when possible.
It’s not about which thing has a more valuable or “better” life. It’s about we’re all creatures, and sometimes we have to kill other creatures, in order to stop them from hurting us, or causing us problems.
I would treat a human exactly the same as the ants: intrude my residence and try to harm me, i’ll probably kill you. And if you bring friends, i’ll take as many of you with me as i can, whether ant, or man. The difference, i suppose, is that ants don’t understand reason, and so you can’t explain to them that they should not come in your house or infiltrate your food, or make fortress-mounds in your yard, and that they don’t have to bite you, or what will happen if they do.
Maybe if those ants would “grow up” and make an effort to not be so stupid, we wouldn’t have to kill them so often? 😉
But when it comes right down to it, he who can dominate others, wins, and is therefore “better” than them… whether he is honorable or respectable… he has won. When it comes to survival, winning is all that matters… honor and respect are just constructs. Honor and respect are only relevant once long-term survival has been established. In that scenario, i find them worthy and valuable… but when survival is in question, one must prepare to forgo such luxuries, for the sake of winning.
You could end up being reincarnated as an ant. I think humans are rather low on the scale. Good people may get reincarnated as dogs or birds.
Off topic but I don’t get people killing deer for sport. It takes a pretty sick person to want to kill something so beautiful for fun when food is available.
I had a vivid dream last night and it got me wondering if the “afterlife” is a dream like experience….no one knows.
As i am, i don’t think i should ‘fear’ being reincarnated as an ant. Everything that lives, dies.
With my current understanding of existence, “if i was an ant,” i would expect life to be short and difficult, but hey, those things can lift like 50x their weight, so that’s pretty cool, i guess.
As far as the human spectrum of malice toward ants goes: i’m certainly on the “has not been excessively unkind to ants” side.
I think it’s kinda silly to think that humans are “rather low on the scale.” We are clearly one of the most dominant creatures on the planet. We might not technically be the pinnacle, but we’re certainly “near the top,” all things considered.
That’s not to say that humans have more of a right to live than anything else… but the reality is that not all earthly life forms are “compatible,” not all of them can peacefully coexist. And so there are clashes and conflicts, and the “better” animal usually wins, even if he has to use ‘dishonorable’ tactics or tools or weapons only he can wield, to win. That’s just life. If you have an advantage, it would be absurd for a lesser-advantaged or disadvantaged creature, to expect or demand you not use it, while said other creature is in the midst of attempting to impose his own will upon you, and make you dead.
If i have a gun and a much “better” man aggressively approaches, intending to dominate me, you’re damn right i’m going to pull the trigger. I don’t care if he’s “better.” I care about winning, even if observers might think it’s “unfair” to shoot someone who only has a knife. I’m just protecting myself from harm that will be imposed upon me, if i don’t act to prevent it. Same with ants. And because i’m so much larger and more powerful than they are, it’s so easy to destroy them, that most of us don’t even think twice about it.
But yeah. I don’t agree with killing just for sport… though i certainly agree with venison steak/jerky/sausage being delicious.
Sidenote: if we didn’t kill them (eating or not), there would quite a lot more accidents on the roadways in certain areas, as they tend to just leap out in front of vehicles at highway speeds.
Humans shape the world to their whim. That’s the key to making the case that we are, indeed, the “top.” We don’t just go along with the way things are, we make things the ways we want them to be, or die trying. That’s the big difference. Although, i suppose you could say ants do this too, as they build mounds where they please, and attempt to overwhelm their obstacles. It’s just that we can kill them, far more easily and rapidly than they can kill us, and so, when there is a conflict, we almost always prevail.
The blueish black ants I leave alone….they generally return the favor….However I got bit by quite a few red fire ants during childhood and I hate them.
lol. I don’t believe in sons inheriting the sins of their fathers, and i don’t believe in holding myself responsible for the actions of other humans.
Btw, a deer will totally kick your ass, one on one, unless you have a gun… or like, a chainsaw, or something. Usually they just run like hell, but if you find yourself face to face in the wild, be scared. We like to think they’re all cute and defenseless, but they’re just as vicious as any other wild animal… but since they’re also quite fast and agile, they tend to run away instead of seeking confrontation.
I’m just not sure how deer dropping atomic bombs is even relevant.
How does having a mass-extermination implement make us “inferior” in any way? If anything, it makes “us” the dominant species. We don’t even have to be there. We can fly our mechanical birds far above the target, press a button, and erase whatever exists below.
Humans have more control, and more ability to impose their will upon their surroundings, than anything else on earth, even though we’re not the biggest or strongest. We developed effective tools and methods for equalizing or negating the advantages of size and strength. We built and programmed microprocessors. We built rockets, space-shuttles, went to the moon, and even brought some non-humans into space. We built a space-station. We built who knows how many satellites. We built HAARP.
Not only are we capable of compassion, we are capable of utter disregard for anything but ourselves, or even ourselves, in the right conditions. I don’t think we are meant to be “nice.” I think we’re “meant to be” capable of whatever physical violence and psychological manipulation we find is most effective. We are supposed to be effective. We are supposed to survive, to win, to dominate, to terraform… whether the ends justify the means, or not. We are supposed to do whatever we think is best, or right, or most effective.
I don’t think we were ever supposed to become docile or complacent. But quite a lot of us certainly are.
@clevername AGAIN you’re not getting my point…my scale wasnt’ based on dominance on the Earth. Please clevername stop knitpicking everyone’s replies esp. when you’re just typing things that have nothing to do with original intent of what was written. Perhaps this is you M.O? It’s childish and not helpful. Come up with your own ideas.
I’ll “knit pick” whatever i damn well please. That wasn’t my intent, but since i’m accused, i might as well do it.
And, if your “scale” isn’t based on Earth… then wtf are you basing it on? Where else have you lived? What planet are you from?
My replies are not required to have anything to do with “your intent.”
You’re talking about reincarnation, ants having equal rights to humans, and afterlives.
I’m talking about reality.
You’re apparently upset that i’m not content with ignoring reality, and pretending that humans are all terrible, because of things some of them like to do.
You’re talking about deer dropping atomic bombs. Do you even /have/ a point? If so, what is it? And how did this thread about ants, become about “your point?” Aren’t we both allowed to make points? Or do you have some sort of inalienably superior right to express your point, that i don’t have, just because my opinion differs from yours?
I damn sure won’t act like *I* dropped the bombs, just because the bomb-droppers were human and i’m human too. I didn’t. I wasn’t even born yet. I disagree in principle, with lots of shit people do.
Like, claiming it’s “childish” for me to have a different opinion and a better argument.
I honestly don’t understand why you’re mad. Maybe it’s just because anyone had anything to say, that wasn’t what you wanted them to say. Maybe you just wanted to have the final word? Surely it can’t be something so arbitrary as that…
Humans have a genetic disposition towards the type of behavior that people term, “awful.” It’s like the difference between bonobos and chimpanzees. I’d rather hang out with a bonobo, given the choice.

Why do people burn ants under the magnifying glass. Does it make them happy.
^yes. this is very fun.

Microbes still slaughter us by the millions.
Well, let me know when a deer drops atomic bombs on the elderly and children. 🙂
The blueish black ants I leave alone….they generally return the favor….However I got bit by quite a few red fire ants during childhood and I hate them.
I think I would prefer deer to people, imo.

@clevername I really like your theory that we are meant to be “effective.” It certainly is all about the ‘survival of the fittest.’
