Only way to find out is to trust cautiously, but equally with everyone. When they break your trust once, forgive them and keep trusting them (provided they’re sorry for it). If they break your trust twice, forgive them and keep trusting them (provided they’re sorry for it). If they break your trust three times, declare them non-friends and find someone who will forgive you at least twice when you break their trust.
The next time you find yourself in a “pickle” or a very tough time, take a look to your left, and then to your right. If they are truly your friends, they’ll be right beside you through thick and thin. I am talking figuratively, of course, but you understand the concept. I have had the honour of such friends in my life for which I am eternally thankful for, but I severed all ties and now it’s just me. Whenever I was in trouble though, there they were, dragging my arse out of yet another avoidable situation I stumbled into.
True friends are there for you through good times and bad times. They give constructive critism and sometimes will be blantly honest as needed. True friends are friends that still contact you after months of not talking to each other even when you live quite aways from each other. They laugh with you instead of at you. They joke like no tomorrow without hurting each others feelings. They update each other on their lives. They send photos to each other. They hang out. They cry together, eat together. They are sometimes the best of friends and mostly likely will know your secrets, if not all of them. They know you and your personality. I could go on and on.
I only have met two true friends IRL but they live far away from me. I would like to try to find friends closer to me but I’m having personal issues with that at the moment.
