I am perfectly aware that this is a stupid post but who cares? Is it bad that I listen to music about suicide, rage, and good ol’ depression. Should I listen to “happy” music or should I continue my current listening habbits?
And, is filling your own head with false positives necessarily a good thing? Seems like increasing positive thoughts without increasing positive actions, might result in even more profound disappointment.
If you think music is making you feel worse, decide whether you want that result or not, and then act accordingly.
If “suicide, rage, and good ol depression” are what you listen to, then I can only guess you enjoy that music. Listening to other music on the pretense that it’s happy or positive will likely not end up in a pleasant listening experience for you personally: you will not enjoy it because it’s not your favored genre…..however this is not to say you shouldn’t branch out and try new forms of music. Experiment with new music that’s interesting to you , not just music that you THINK is making you feel better because it SAYS it’s making you feel better.
I think it’s natural to want to hear sounds that resonate with your mood. I am the same. For instance I like my movies dark and depressing as possible, lol, that or supernatural scary stuff, anything that involves death, lol. I don’t listen to much music these days preferring silence a lot of the time, but when I did it was The Smiths, Radiohead (yes, I’m showing my age), sombre hip hop with plenty of gunshots, explosions and police sirens (when I was a bit manic). I like gritty realism though many would say ‘why are you listening to that depressing music?’ Point is, it makes me feel less alone, knowing others have been to the dark side too and made something good or beautiful out of it. I also like prison dramas and documentaries, because I basically feel like I’m doing time, and I loved Breaking Bad which was about as dark as it comes lol.
So I don’t necessarily think you should start listening to ‘happy’ music. Personally that would make me feel much worse…it’s enough to cope with other people’s gaiety and ‘happiness’ as it is.. Though you may find yourself branching out at some point when you’re ready to or your mood lifts.

Define “positive.”
