I remember thinking about that at several points. Something so simple like a smile does make a difference for some people, specially when they are at their lowest (depending on the person and situation). It’s really hard to do so when you are feeling down, but trying it at least isn’t so bad. Many people have helped me a lot just by being friendly (even if it’s by being polite and i’ve never seen them again), so giving it back somehow feels like a good thing as well.
Many times, you might be afraid that a simple smile might be misinterpreted by the other person, esp. if they’re of the opposite sex. (even if you’re not trying to ‘hit’ on them and just want to be friendly)
