do they also tell you how intelligent and well spoken and talented you are? Just trying to figure out if all psychologists say the same things to people to boost there egos
the shrink I found through an ad on the bus did, but the guy my doctor sent me to didn’t (he didn’t say much though), but I here it all the time from people around me who think I’m just in a slump and need some motivation. I assume that’s a tactic all people use when talking to someone depressed/suicidal, trying to get them to see the positives in their own personality.
Not really. Although, I’m somewhat vocal about conveying when I feel patronized. If I had all positive things going for me, then I wouldn’t be in the circumstances that I’m in.
They probably say different things to different people to help them see their self-worth and focus on their good points. I had CBT once – they didn’t compliment me, but they got me to look at myself from other people’s perspective. She got me to remember compliments I’d had, because she was focusing on my looks and anxiety… Which weren’t my main issue.
The worst just didn’t say much. The best were amazing cheerleaders. Most were very positive. All of them were insightful but short on giving me mental tools to cope. I’ve picked out a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist to try. Supposedly there are very tool oriented.
I was supposed to make my appointment today but instead I installed a ceiling fan for a friend and fucked off. I’m dragging my feet because I know once I start therapy I’ll probably be trapped by my own logic and be forced to live with myself. I’m very tired of … wait… there’s a song lyric… “This rollercoaster is taking its toll…”
Nope (if they did i’d laugh in their face). Good ones should help you to find out what you want/need and ways to achieve it for yourself, otherwise they are just wasting your time by filling your head with what they think you want to hear (which is completely different in most cases). Filling your head with positive nonsense can be seen as an insult to intelligence too, because (at least imho) if one has so many positive qualities… why are we even seeing them? it’s obvious we’re doing something wrong (by our own hand or by external influences), otherwise we wouldn’t be there.
I remember that the last time i went to one she was just telling me what i was supposed to do next (after a major breakdown), even if i was not ready to take the next step… i do get that sometimes we need some positive reassurance or guidance, but if it’s not done properly or in due time it can be as damaging as not having therapy at all. Needless to say, after that session ended i left and never went back. Same as a pair of shoes, it does take some time to find a psych that “fits” with you.

No I’ve had psychologists when I was a kid and growing up tell me that no one will ever love me, that I’m disgusting and a fucked up piece of shit.
I almost want to say those psychopaths should be shot. That’s a horrible thing to say. They should NEVER say that. Or get their licenses revoked
Psychologists*
yes
Seems like it.
Wow. You should have reported these people and they should have lost their licenses. Horrible.

I was a kid, no one would listen to me. My mom’s very authoritarian and believes strongly in hierarchy and I’ve never had a voice to her.
My biological mother was the same way.
