Depression is usually caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. My depression is often triggered by negative thoughts. When I have a bad ride or receive a low grade on an assignment/test, I often begin to think of myself as a failure. I have been working on this with my psychologist. Instead of saying I should have done something, I try to apply to the future. For example, I will spend more time studying a specific chapter or section or I will work on keeping my horse’s attention. This way, I’m not beating myself up for the mistakes I have made. Instead, I’m learning from those mistakes. However, my negative thoughts always outweigh the things that are positive. If you feel like a failure because of a bad result, try to choose things that went well. This can also apply to looks. My weight fluctuates which makes me really sensitive about my body image. Then I focus on something I like about myself, like my hair or eyes. There’s always something positive about a situation, no matter how small that good thing may be. Remember that things are never all bad. I understand this can be difficult, but the more you are down on yourself, the more depressed/suicidal you become. Depression is a vicious cycle, but escape is possible even if it’s only for a few minutes.

Funny, I’m just reading a book on this. Basically, we receive tons of sensory input from the world, but can only process a tiny fraction of it. So what we choose to focus on matters. But that is rather theoretical.
In a more practical way, you can actually change where your attention goes.
For example, I recently quit Facebook (but have now temporarily returned). During the time I was no longer a member, I suddenly NEVER EVER worried about whether someone had liked my latest post. I NEVER spent whole evenings on Facebook (I spent them on SP instead…) where I could have been building up sufficient loneliness to actually venture out into the world and meet people irl. All these habits which made my life more depressing, gone just like that.
If we make these kinds of physical (in this case digital) changes to our environment, that environment, and hence that life, will be nicer to live in.
