My misophonia’s really bothering me. The other night I couldn’t breathe and I felt like crying because of how a family member was eating popcorn. They noticed so I had to lie. And spoons clinking against bowls-I can’t even breathe or concentrate when I hear it! Or when I hear people eating chips really loudly or cereal! It makes me feel bad that I feel this way. I don’t want to find them disgusting. How does misophonia even come about? Does anyone else suffer from it?
P.S. At dinner, I’ve had to covertly cover my ears or find excuses to leave. 🙁

Ah, unfortunately there is very little research on misophonia, and the debate is still on if it’s even a real disorder. So I can’t answer your title question. However, the little research done on it suggests that it may occur due to negative associations with certain sounds, a disconnect in the brain, or a form of tinnitus. The only advice I can give is to develop coping mechanism. Also, if you’re in those settings, try your hardest to not focus on those sounds, focus on other things. Anything but those sounds. Sorry, there isn’t a lot of advice I can give. There’s just too little research on this.
i have misophonia (yay only learned the name now)
and i am pretty sure it’s not from negative associations… i wish there was more about it.
Hey i understand you, what you should do is just explain it. That you are hypersensitive to certain sounds. i leave ppl when they eat or i listen to music (i have headphones on most of the time) or i tell them to try not to eat hyperloud because it bothers me so much like light bothers someone who has an intense migraine.
Don’t try to suffer through it, try to avoid it and just explain it to people if they bother you (ask you not to listen to music).
Maybe it’s just me being a jerk, even though I don’t mean to be. I had it for a while and then it started going away and then it came back WITH A VENGEANCE. Maybe it’s related to me hating eating and hating that I feel fat?
I wouldn’t call it being a jerk. The way you describe it, it looks like a serious issue you’re experiencing. Ah, that may be it. If you hate eating, and all that’s associated with it, then it would stand to reason that you’d find sounds related to eating, irritating and disgusting. However, like I said, there’s too little research. So, I can’t definitively say that it is the case, but it seems like a likely possibility.
I had no idea it was a thing. Its something i have always had, i have to clench my jaw and shut my eyes when i hear that clicking noise of spoons on bowls. And dont get me started on loud chewers!!!
Im glad im not alone.
Exactly! I sometimes literally cry or can’t breathe and get panicked when I have to listen to certain eating sounds. It’s not with non-eating sounds, but it’s unbearable with eating sounds. Sometimes my own eating sounds bother me. Sometimes the unbearable-ness of certain sounds fades a little, but mostly it’s really bad. It’s more than finding eating sounds annoying, you know what I mean? I’m glad I’m not alone either.
Yeah i totally know what u mean. Toture for me was when my nan was alive and i would visit her in the old folks home, & get there at lunch time!! Omg, 200 old people with alzheimers trying to eat or be fed by staff. I would stick it out cos i loved her so much but it was unbearable.
I completely understand re misophonia. I’ve had it for 30 years and was recently diagnosed by a specialist. My trigger noises are eating sounds, coughing, sneezing, sniffing, etc. It has gotten progressively worse with age and I feel reclusive. Misophonia causes tremendous stress for me and the only thing that helps is to use headphones and music to blot out trigger noises. This isn’t always practical of course.
