Why is high school so importent. I plan to go to a tech school to learn certain skills, but me learning how to talk to someone from another country doesn’t matter. For example, I have to be active, so I can”t be an office all day as a job and my learning algabra 2 doesn’t hep me reach my goal of being in and active job. Another example is that I want to be a medical doctor, but me learning how to paint doesn’t help. So I wish high school wasn’t required to get a career because a lot the thing I have learn or heard people learn things that they never use in life.
So I am mad because of this; and also my parent are trying to do all different classes that are field that I don’t like, example art, and they want me to be a straight A student, but I don’t care for it. I mean I am street smarts and I know how too live in society, but me know the periodic table by heart is a waste of time for me. But my parent think I am a straight A student and I have to know thing I will never care for. So if you read thing, let me know what you think and tell me the reason for high school and learning things that I will never use.

Sorry about how bad writing this is, I’m just so angry and frustrated right now
better to know the things you don’t need, than to not know the things you do need
Statistically, people with a diverse liberal arts background make more money than those who run straight to technical school.
Was being a medical doctor an example or what you really want to do? Cuz if you really want to do that you’re going to want a periodic table tattooed to the inside of your eyelids.
Knowing general science stuff is never a waste. Knowing literature teaches you about the human condition. Knowing art teaches you to harness your creativity. Philosophy… Religion… Political Science… Geology… Monkey Taming… They do come in handy at times. They make you a more vibrant human being which increases your self awareness and helps attract sexual partners.
But never take trombone classes. That shit will fuck you up!

Good point Snorlax… however I see lxmyrick’s point.
Lxmyrick, I think going to a tech school is great. Learning a trade can be very valuable and I think even more helpful after school when getting a job than just a diploma… but the diploma is important. The truth is you don’t use much of what you learn in high school (algebra…. yeah I was a wiz at that in high school but if you sat me in front of an algebra problem today… I wouldn’t know the first thing to do… cause if you don’t use it you lose it. Haha) in the real world as an adult generally speaking.
I think high school would be better used for preparing kids for the adult world with basic knowledge like how to balance a checkbook or understanding mortgages, and other useful things you need going forward once you leave high school and start your adult life. Sure learning about western civilization, great poets, Latin, Romeo and Juliet and memorizing square roots can be fun and interesting but they aren’t necessities ary to live life.
Dropping out of school (not saying you are thinking this, just putting this out there)most of the time is a very foolish thing to do for most people. You are just giving yourself a hill to climb in life you don’t need… why start out on that bad foot when the struggle is already hard enough as it is most of the time when making that transition to adulthood in the first place? So it’s important to suck it up in high school, do what ya gotta do, and get the diploma.
Your parents want the best for you, most parents do even if it’s to a fault sometimes. No parent in their right mind wants to see their child struggle so they push hard in hopes this will make the difference. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. But remember this, parents have a wisdom about life you don’t and can’t possibly have at 17… so it comes from a place of good intentions if nothing else when they do push. Sometimes your parents are right but you won’t know this til later when you are older… then it becomes clear and you get it… but some do get it wrong too.
It’s frustrating I know… I don’t miss that part of being a teen, but life really is just a bunch of lessons, a bunch of right and wrong turns we all make ongoing even as adults regardless of the parental guidance we had growing up being right or wrong, good or bad. Some lessons we learn easily enough and some we learn the hard way…. and some we never, ever learn! Haha. But that again is life.
Teen angst is a real thing. Embrace it and use it for your own greater good and positively towards a bright future for yourself cause soon enough you will be in the driver’s seat of your life…. no one else… oh and another piece of advice… pick and choose your battles cause fighting congress ALL the time gets exhausting and can be a waste of time and energy better spent elsewhere. 🙂
thanks for your advice
the problem is you never know what you might “need to know”, even if you are set on something, thats why it’s good to touch base with the basics
even if going to technical school to learn a specific trade, the high school qualification can come in hand later down the line, and the “basic” knowledge can even be helpful
even as a carpenter/construction worker algebra and maths can be handy and used in several non-management/supervisor situations, even if it’s not 100% of the job, it’s nice for the 2% of the time you run into a problem where you could use it.
and people forget we use a lot of the useless things daily, (granted some pay less attention to some details and others got their head stuck at a screen and wont bother), but maths, useless arts, english, literature still gets used daily,
since it’s not just about “painting a picture”, it’s about interpreting scenarios, thought, meanings, social interactions happen so on. where of course, english can come in handy, helps communicating, and lit exposes you to ideas, morals, imagination, and further honing of social skills.
i was taught there is a reason high school on it’s own isn’t an “education” as such, like a path is later. it’s a stepping stone, not just to give a sense of basics which might help one decide later on, but also basics of the needs you will encounter in society every day life.
sure they might not teach mortgages and check balancing outright, but they do teach you maths that would give you the skill to if not get a direct handle on it outright, a better basic understanding where as if you had learned no maths, because you would never use it deciding to be a factory worker.
so on, even chemistry would, which many people ignore would help them tread safer in daily life, when handing simple everyday stuff like cleaning materials. Sure the exact make up and compounds might not be as relevant in all cases, but knowing not to mix ammonia and chlorine, or acid/base interactions since we handle that “dangerous” stuff surprisingly often.
even something as simple as sex ed, has a profound impact in areas that do receive vs the areas that don’t. despite just being “birds and the bees” and ought to be “simple” enough to be covered by mom and dad, yet it’s not and fail that way more often than not, ’cause mom and dad ain’t as smart as they might think sometimes
it might not be as condensed as later or specific educations, but it does touch at much needed basics, despite how much people realize they use or don’t actually end up using.
of course we could just ignore it all, and head straight for specialized education right out of elementary, and see if the the Darwin Award ceremonies increase or not, and take it from there 😉
