Me and my boyfriend share two cats. One is almost two years old, the other is probably almost a year. Neither of them are neutered. I’d like to get them neutered but since they’re my boyfriend’s cats as well as mine, he doesn’t want to get them neutered because it’s “evil” and I don’t think it’s worth a fight so I just let him be ignorant. He doesn’t listen to reason, I’ve tried to explain the benefits of neutering like a hundred times but he still insists that it’s evil. So basically I’m just here to rant about it a little.
I just don’t get what’s so evil about spaying or neutering an animal. He also thinks it’s evil for cats to be inside only. He thinks it’s evil to not let them be able to go in and out as they please.
Pros of spay and neuter:
1. Eliminates the risk of ovarian cysts, uterine infections and cancer of the reproductive tract.
2. Reduces the need to roam and escape. The cat is less likely to be gone for days on end, and coming back with scars, fleas, and diseases. (Boyfriend: But it’s evil to not let cats do what is natural for them!)
3. Eliminates risk of cat STDs.
4. Helps with overpopulation. When you breed your cat, you’re basically giving a death sentence for the kittens and cats stuck in a pound. (Boyfriend: If everyone keeps neutering their cats, they will go extinct!)
5. Cats no longer go into heat, and drastically reduces risks of spraying, begging to be let out, etc.
Pros of keeping a cat inside only:
1. No fleas!
2. No chance for cat to get lost or stolen.
3. Cat won’t have a chance to get hit by cars.
4. No chance of someone mistreating or abusing your cat.
5. Predators, such as owls and crazy dogs won’t get the chance to attack your pet.
6. Cat won’t get into fights with other cats.
7. Most diseases are eliminated, such as rabies.
8. Inside only cats live longer then outdoor cats and inside/outside cats.
9. You know EXACTLY what your cat is eating. It’s likely not to get food poisoning.
How is any of this evil?
I think it’s evil to NOT neuter your cat. He thinks that neutering is “playing god” but he is 100% for abortions and birth control for humans. I think he’s the evil one. He complains about our male cat always being gone, yet does nothing about it. It could EASILY be fixed. He’s going to be pissed when our female gets pregnant. But it’s his fault.

Your boyfriend sounds like a total retard to me. Sadly there’s quite some people on this planet who share his viewpoints.
Maybe you should tell him if he wants to let his cat live naturally then send it off in the woods, alone, with no human intervention. it’s really that simple. Anything else is not natural and he’s cherry picking using his stupid opinions.
I used to work in an animal shelter, and I euthanized many animals. We did it for several reasons – health and behavior issues that were beyond the scope of our not for profit facility, and space. Space. Not enough kennels. I euthanized kittens under the age of one month who were so sick they couldn’t breathe, their eyes were crusted shut, they were covered in fleas and suffering from calici, a contagious virus that is deadly to cats. And where did many of these kittens come from? The same idiots, year after year, that let their unaltered cats run around reproducing. One man told me he would neither neuter or microchip his cats because to do so was to, and I quote, “work in legion with Satan himself.” Yeah.
I’m a pretty easy going guy for the most part, but not when it comes to this issue. Tell your boyfriend to wake the fuck up. There’s too many shelter workers euthanizing too many innocent animals because of that ignorant attitude. It’s one thing to euthanize an old cat or dog who has lived a long, productive life and is ready to rest, and another thing to hold a struggling kitten in one hand and inject with the other hand because some dipshit thinks neutering is evil. Tell him to get off his testosterone fueled macho “I ain’t takin’ nobody’s nuts away from ’em” high horse and use his head for something other than a hat rack. The kindest thing a person can do to an animal that goes outdoors is to eliminate the chance that their INEVITABLE offspring will end up facing certain death in a shelter.
Thank you for this comment. I hope lots of readers (and cats!) benefit from your behind the scenes perspective.
Sorry for the attitude. I apologize for cyber yelling, but not for standing up for animals.
Don’t apologize! I 100% agree with you. Our unneutered male has been gone for about a week now and last night my boyfriend was like “I’m sick of Chibi’s unloyal ass. He’s not even our cat anymore. He’s never home.”
And I was like “He’s doing what an unneutered male cat is programmed to do.”
And he was like “Programmed? Like a computer?”
Yeah… Okay buddy. No sense in arguing with you. Lol
he might change his tune when your place gets overrun with kittens.
some weird and screwed up part of me thinks that keeping animals inside is akin to… well, keeping a human locked up inside. everyone deserves to see the world. not be locked up. hey… but hypocritical me would keep mice inside a cage, inside a building aka my residence, if I had them as pets
Neutering – OK, I wouldnt consider it a “good” thing but its kinda the lesser evil so ye…
Keeping your cant only inside is other thing tho. If you live in a big city I guess you dont have any other option but honestly I wouldnt have a cat If I was in a big city. Its like with people or children. If you get too overprotective it does more harm then good. Cats are territorial animals and they have in their genes to go out and fight for their territory. Is it dangerous? hell yea it is. But thats what makes it fun and exciting!
We have 2 cats and they love to go outside. I can see the excited look in their eyes when they demand to be released out. As much as I love them I would rather have them live exciting life playing and fighting with other cats outside and possibly get killed by a car than keeping them locked up only so they could live like 3 years longer. At least thats how I would want it for my self and I want the same for my cats.
