for various reasons I’m trying to cut back on the coffee. The big one is that it isn’t good for my anxiety, and makes me want to get stuff done when no progress is possible…. but this headache… it might break me.
I woke up with a headache, from the bottom of my left eye socket to the top of my head. I tried to meditate out of it, hydrate myself out of it, to no luck, and now even distraction fails in the face of it…. I’m probably going to lose willpower and end up having a cup of coffee, but for the record, I don’t want it, I don’t think I should need it.
Why is it that if you want to quit nicotine or alcohol there’s all the resource in the world, but quitting coffee? good luck with that.

I’m sorry man. It’s painful to quit the little things cos the people around you don’t take it seriously. I never liked coffee much. It makes me jittery and I hate the energy slump later. Then I tried green tea cos I read it’s got a chemical that releases the caffeine slowly. And yeah, it’s better than coffee, but I still get the energy slump. You should try it. Slow caffeine in smaller doses sounds like the thing to help you through this.
Congrats and good luck. I truly believe that caffeine worsens depression in some people. At least with me (and members of my family) I’ve noticed that the brief 2 hr high is followed by a full day of misery.
But like all drugs, that brief high is hard to say no to.
I agree it’s hard to quit coffee because it’s not really taken seriously like cigarettes or alcohol. Even I like to joke about it, but some days I feel like a caffeine crash could literally push me over the suicidal edge.
I’m trying to quit also. Starting tomorrow I guess. Keep us posted especially if you notice a difference in your suicidal thoughts.
Headaches used to be very rare for me, maybe once a year at most. But since I started living in my current apt, I get them more frequently, due to neighbors with kids making noise at bad hours (very early in the morning, I more of a night owl).
I planned to leave my current job and become self-employed as I’d do much better financially, but it totally wrecked that plan, so I’m focused on moving out by the end of the year hopefully.
I’d strongly advise using Advil (or other meds), it does a great job for me. I had some pain behind my right eye earlier today and now it’s gone. Also try to avoid any work, call in a sick day if you can.
The best thing to do is get some sleep if possible, it’ll fix it up. Also while tea helps me usually, I agree with the others, doc’s recommend to avoid caffeine when you have a headache, just have some other warm drink, it’ll help.
I used to be pill averse but eventually I got over it. I still don’t like taking them unless I have to.
Are you the type to make lists for hours? And detail things like calendars?
Coffee in the Mormon’s for extroverts.
