to watch? thought provoking?
idk, i like dark but well made stuff- like Dexter, Death Note, Penny Dreadful. True Crime. Death. Twist endings (yes i know, Dexter had a crap ending). Revenge shows, sci-fi, supernatural. But I guess it’s not about the genre. Some shows are just better done than others.
Most of the stuff I like is more obscure and less popular with the general public (but giving examples of popular ones ofc so you get an idea).
idk, i’m bored with all the same ol’ crap out there.

Oppenheimer was pretty good. Going to see Blue Beatle in 2 hours. In terms of TV, what are you looking for exactly? If its anime and cartoons, FLCL, FMA Brotherhood, Welcome to the NHK (has topics of isolation, depression and suicide), Venture Bros, and My Adventures With Superman. Live Action I hear The Bear is pretty good. Love on Netflix is alright, never finished it. Easy on Netflix is also good. For Actiony stuff I suggest Umbrella Academy.
True Detective was pretty dark and somewhat thought provoking. Six Feet Under had some interesting perspectives on death. Mindhunter seemed well-made if you’re into that sort of thing, a bit too dark for me. The Expanse was a fairly decent sci-fi show (or Firefly). True Blood was quite fun if you’re more into vampires and werewolves than space.
Seen a bunch of stuff, depends on what you’re into: Action-watch the Mission Impossible series and James Bond, Heart of Stone…Sci-Fi, Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune….tv show Strange New Worlds.
Lately I’ve been into heist movies…since a bunch of them I liked such as Baby Driver, Army of Thieves, The Italian Job, old and new versions, The Transporter, many other suggestions under Google search.
Older sci-fi classics: Alien, Aliens, Bladerunner, War of the Worlds, Independence Day 1 and 2…Contact, Starship Troopers series…80s Buck Rogers.
Ofc there’s the whole Marvel Avengers Series, Thor, Cpt America, etc. Great comedy movies too and shows.
let me see, shows…. Prodigal Son is awesome, it’s on HBO Max. Evil on Paramount+, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is another great new show on Netflix…. Less dark, but still fun is Solar Opposites on Hulu, they just dropped a new season and that’s what I’m watching.
Older stuff: Haunting of Hill House, Criminal Minds, Twilight Zone (the original series), Beyond Belief, Buried in the Backyard,
oh my, and that’s just shows. Let me dig into my movie library. First off, Saw….. I have no idea why those films are so satisfying to me…. but that. Dead Silence, same director, somehow most don’t like it as much, it’s the same beats though. Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2, and Ghostbusters Afterlife, personally I’d skip the 2016 movie.
Anything by Terry Gilliam it would seem, but especially Brothers Grimm, Brazil, Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen, and 12 Monkeys.
In no particular order: The Call (2020), Case 39 (2010), The Final Wish (2019), Hellraiser (1987), The Black Phone (2022), Seven (1995), Red Dragon (2002), Pumpkinhead (1989), The Ice Harvest (2005), War Inc. (2008), Bubba Hotep (2003), Candyman (1992), Masque of Red Death (1964), Sweeney Todd (2007), The House of Usher (1960), Pit and the Pendelum (1961), Population 436 (2006), Beyond the Gates (2016), House of Wax (2005), Christmas Horror Story (2015), Dark Water (2005), Grosse Pointe Blanke (1997), Being John Malkovich (1999), The Caller (2011), John Dies at the End (2012), Dr. Strangelove (1964), Pitch Black (2000), Lumberjack Man (2015),
finally, unasked for as it may be, lately I’m into dark podcasts, so I’ve got to throw out a recommend for Morbid and Behind the Bastards…. Morbid is literally better than 99% of true crime “shows”, and I’ve developped a real thing for true awful stories. Like, even though I’ve read a few books on it, they did a 5 parter on HH Holmes, and it was fricken wonderful. If you want to check them out, start there.
oh heartless, u fellow dark soul…lol
seems like out of everyone, your list fits my dark tastes better.
i am not a fan of american gore or cheesy horror movies, but i do like dark themed shows. ones that give you pause to think.
i LOVED Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. I wish he made more.
i’ll have to take a look at each one and see. also, i don’t have Netflix or Hulu so I’ll have to search where I can watch ’em free O_o
well that’s the upshot of those podcasts, they’re on Youtube for free
One of the best films I have seen in recent years is You Were Never Really Here (2017) with Joaquin Phoenix.
