What shows are there that are good to watch? Ones where they show really messed up people, like hoarders, my 600lb life, etc. Like what shows that are actually interesting to watch?
Even if you were to find more shows like that, youre still comparing yourself to others, which might worsen pain for you down the road if you perceive that someone has their life together better than you.
It’s your life, and your decision, and I’m sure you know yourself better than I do. Im no therapist–just someone who has fallen into this trap before. It might be better, instead of looking down upon those less fortunate, to make a daily inventory of your good qualities. 5 things good about you, every morning. Even just 1 or 2 things might help.
Best of luck
I’ve done all of those things- list my good qualities, repeat nice things about myself to the mirror, blah blah- none of that works.
The point of watching those shows isn’t to look down on others. I feel loads of sympathy for many of those people- especially on hoarders where they tell you their back story of abuse, SA or whatever it is some of them suffer from.
Watching others deal with life in a non-functional manners makes me feel less of a freak myself. The intent isn’t to “look down” on others.
It’s just like when you are in a mental hospital with others suffering from depression/suicide etc. You feel less crazy, alone and a freak when you see others like you. It is not about feeling better by looking down at people. Hell, I’ve had LOTS of people over the years tell me to look at those worst off than me and be happy that I’m not them but that doesn’t help me be any less depressed to do that.
I just wanted to watch some shows where people aren’t all happy-happy and every problem gets solved after a simple 30min show. Most sitcoms make life/problems/solutions so easy peasy.
Lately I’m obsessed with 60 Days In. People who go to jail for 2 months to act as informants on illegal activities among inmate populations. Seeing the desperation and frustration that breeds inside jails is fascinating to me, and serves as a reminder to me that freedom is more important to me than anything.
The only one in that vein I remember watching was Biggest Loser, which is only really screwed up when you find out the horrible things done when the cameras weren’t on….
I watch a lot about monsters, buried in the backyard, criminal minds, Prodigal Son, Evil
screwed up people are everywhere…. recently I realized even Star Trek involves screwed up people, I used to think it represented extremely healthy people, but those people LIVE at their work, when weird shit happens at work it literally derails their entire life
