well, you know part of my answer is chemical, did you know that anything capable of decreasing nerve pain (as from an injury) is also generally capable of relieving psychological pain? It means my headache pills today are pulling double duty, and I can feel that.
but you don’t have to ingest anything to enjoy these effects. Our bodies are capable of producing a morphine equivelent, endorphins from physical exertion. Of course that does tend to create some physical pain, which can also distract from emotional pain. So, exercise, not that I’m particularly good at taking that medicine lately.
Oh, brief exposure to extreme heat and/or cold can cut significantly into pain. It’s part of why I like winter, go out and sit in the cold until I can barely stand it, then come in and sit by the fire or take a warm bath, and repeat the cycle until the pain is manageable. Again, trading one kind of pain for another, really.
For me via substances – Weed and Sleepers and occassionally the opposite sex but thats a dead end and only a temporary relief, the pain comes back right on cue the next morning. There was a time I relished movies and books and they served as a distraction but those days are gone unfortunately.
There was a time movies and books held me captivated, now to use your phrase – barely making a dent, doesn’t go far enough for me, for me there is no fucking Dent!

same. movies and books used to do it for me but they’re barely making a dent now. food used to work too, temporarily, but now even that doesn’t work.
