living life for the pleasure of it is very much a modern notion. Really, anything for the pleasure of it for anyone other than the top 3% richest of humanity only showed up in the last three hundred years, a blink in the lifetime of our species. So, maybe we’re giving humanity too hard a time for not solving it.
I can hear the echoes of my religious and traditionalist reactionary texts from the last two hundred years; It’s a slippery slope, stop scaring people about hell and the inherent evil of not holding your place in the structure, people are going to lose purpose. And of course they’re right for all the wrong reasons. If drudgery for a lousy philosophy is better, then their structure would have been better.
But, we modernized, we don’t need thousands of hands of manual labor anymore, or to demoralize them to that level. Now we have population surplus, and many of them are depressed and without purpose. I’m telling you this because where you are right now is better than where you would be even 75 years ago, or especially 100 years ago. Depressed and pointless is better than being killed off because an industry insists on sticking to old dangerous practices.
We are the surplus population. And that’s the best case scenario. Sad as that is. Sad is better than maimed……. I have the data to back that up.
