Sometimes I can fall down the rabbit hole of youtube sketch comedy like SNL or the Comedy Channel (I don’t really like amateur youtube comedians because they always seem to be trying too hard).
SNL is great due to the sheer volume of videos going back 25 years, you can always find something that generally suits your mood. If it’s reqally funny they often milked it in recurring sketches with the same characters over the years.
Other than that, there isn’t much that makes me crack a smile these days.
One recent (last 10 years) tv show that amused me, not laugh out loud but kinda lowkey sarcasm humor, is Fleabag the UK series from 2016. It’s actually pretty dark and the 1st season revolves around a suicide with a really interesting reveal at the end, so it kept my attention the whole way.
I’m interested to know what kind of comedies other suicidal people like, if suicidal ppl go for comedies at all…
I’m sure I’ve talked about the Captain Hook suicide attempt scene in Hook which I think is one of the funniest depictions of suicidality in all of media
anyway I forgot about it until I decided to share Hook one of my favorite movies with a psych ward and I realized that this children/family movie has this very dark scene and I think that makes it funnier still….
and I learned something new about Hook this week, when they were working on the film early on they decided that Hook and Smee were obviously flaming gay, the way that Smee dotes on Hook and so on. Of course it was the 1990s, and the suits in charge of Hollywood weren’t ready for an openly gay couple on screen of a huge release like that so they couldn’t be as open as they originally played it……
but now I’m rewatching it, the hints are still there.
Another thing I learned, Dustin Hoffman on set was kind of a hound dog. You know how there are prostitutes there for the pirates? Well one of them had half of a strawberry painted on her upper chest and apparently during one of the rehearsals Dustin leaned over and licked it……..
IDK if it’s enough to make a huge deal over, because the video I was watching did make it seem like he had raped her. He did offer her to come hang out in his trailer and she declined. I mean that’s consent and he respected it, to me that’s him being fine. The strawberry incident is edge immoral to me.
But of course, no one can get away with anything anymore.
I try to be progressive and feminist and pro everything, but come on…….. we can’t litigate everything that happened in the last 50 years in hollywood can we?
People want to go after Benny Hill because it was a naughty show, but geez so was Monty Python and Fry and Laughrie, but people pick one comedian and crucify them because they don’t have the fanbase to defend them.
I guess it’s funny, because I don’t care. It’s all grist for the mill of outrage. There’s enough awful out there without me going after old men for their wrongs, there are old men still alive doing awful things now.
I haven’t found a bad Dustin Hoffman performance, and I am still working my way through his collected performances. Hook is still his best, but second would be Wag the Dog. He has tremendous comedic talent. Which is funny, since he’s not considered a comedian.
